Is anyone honestly surprised by this? Those that have been here for a while will remember a proposal to have female only cars on the subway/in the tube station. According to the article, women don't feel safe using public transportation or taxis.
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2011/01/117_80409.html
Quote: |
The survey of 1,500 men and women by the Korea Transport Institute and the Korean Womens Development Institute also found out that almost half of the female respondents were scared of being harassed or experiencing violent driving when in a taxi. |
Quote: |
About 26 percent of the women said they experienced sexual harassment on buses and 21 percent on the subway, compared to 2.3 percent and 2.4 percent of men respectively.
About 52 percent of the female respondents considered taxis as the dangerous means of transportation, citing reasons such as crimes including kidnapping and sexual assauls (31 percent) and violent driving (16 percent). |
Yep, foreign (and Korean) women should know not to take a taxi home while heavily intoxicated. One person I know woke up in a hotel room naked. So be careful. |

Not surprised one bit.
My girlfriend stopped taking the subway years ago because of the crap she had to put up with from men age 35+ during the evening and even during the daytime. She got sick and tired of telling guys off and creeps looking at her in that creepy pervert way. And no she doesn't dress one bit provocatively either. Many older Korean men need to learn to keep their traps shut and not to gock. The subway is not the place to chat up a Korean woman, let alone grope, gock etc. Go to any of the ubiquitous ajossi/ajumma booking clubs if you want to do that.
I always used to think that Korean women gave me the "get away from me pervert" look because I was not Korean and also because of the media's negative portrayal that many western men moan on about. That isn't the case. THey are conditioned to do it because of many perverted Korean men that frequent the subway. Korean women are constantly on their guard and rightfully so.
I've also been told that some Korean men sometimes put cameras in the toilets of female washrooms. That is effed up. |

2 weeks ago, the bus I was in crashed into a car whilst trying to turn into another street. The bus was sitting sideways in the middle of the intersection holding up crazy amounts of traffic in the middle of Gangnam. 2 minutes later, we were off. I'm used to the randomly dangerous driving here and if I have learnt anything about the way ones who drive dangerously is that they actually do it quite well. I'm in a taxi speeding/weaving through traffic like its nobodys buisness.
The women thing is also pretty effed up. You see videos being uploaded almost weekly showing the crap that goes on in the subways. |

Taxi driver rape is apparently so much of a problem that a lot of women know not to take the 개인 (driver-owned) taxis at night. If they must take a taxi they will take one of the HiSeoul taxis and will get a male friend to write down the license plate number and give her a call to make sure she got home OK. |

Good point. If you can't get the license number, all the drivers should have their driver # (along with a photo) posted on the glovebox facing the passenger seat. Text it to a friend as soon as you get into the cab. |

My girlfriend fell asleep on my shoulder while cabbing back to Gunpo from Hongdae. When we got out, the cab driver told her he'd wait for her, perhaps assuming that he was seeing a drunken one night stand. In any case, she passed out, I was up for a bit, and the guy was waiting for 45 minutes. I don't think I'm going out on a limb assuming that he wasn't looking at protecting Korean feminine virtue. |

I'll take this opportunity to let everyone know about the ONE-STOP centers in Korea. In the case of sexual assault, you can head to one of these places and they will help you with everything you need including morning after pill, taking you to the hospital for DNA samples and health check, and psychological support.
If anything happens, please call as soon as possible:
Seoul: 02-3400-1117
Busan: 051-507-1170
Gangwon: 033-243-8117
Chungbuk: 043-272-7117
Junbok: 063-278-0117
Incheon: 032-582-1170
Daegu: 053-556-8117
Gyeongbuk: 054-843-1117
Ulsan: 052-244-3117
Chungnam: 042-280-8436
Junnam: 062-225-3117
Gyeongnam: 055-244-8117
Jeju-do: 064-749-5117
Gyeonggi: 031-216-1117
I'm confident in their services because of what happened to a friend of mine last year (http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=192560&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc) |

Thanks for this! I programed the Seoul number into my phone, just in case anything ever happens to me or anyone I know.
I'm pretty careful when taking the subway or a taxi, and I'd heard some warnings about this, but I've never felt unsafe on Korean public transit. Maybe it's just because it's winter, and I'm in so many layers I doubt anyone would bother with me anyway. But in all seriousness, I'll certainly keep my guard up. I don't go anywhere alone when I've had anything significant to drink, anyway. |

Isn't it the other way around? (Because to become a 개인 driver you need a clean criminal record and driving history, so people trust them over company drivers, many of whom are rumored to be ex-cons.) |

I'd just like to warn all females to be careful when riding the subway and taking taxis. In the case of the subway it doesn't matter if it's day or night - there are always a few weird guys on the trains.
I've had 3 nasty experiences on the subway and 2 of them were in the middle of the afternoon. Each time a guy grabbed me and assaulted me. I made a lot of noise and tried to catch them and even though the entire carriage saw what happened no one came to my assistance. I went to the subway office to report these incidents and the young guys who helped me (I'm guess they were doing alternative military service) pulled out a huge file and told me that there are hundreds of cases reported each day but there is nothing they can do about it. What they should do is have more police patrolling the subway cars and platforms since these incidents are so common. The idea of a female only subway car has been floated numerous times but each time it has failed because the government thought it would be too diffcult to enforce.
Regarding taxi drivers, you need to be extremely careful. In Korea, unlike other countries, there is no government regulation which requires a criminal check be carried out on taxi drivers and as it is considered an "undesirable" job by most Koreans many ex-cons end up becoming taxi drivers as they are unable to find any other employment after being released from prison. There have been a number of murders cases where women have taken taxis at night. After the driver withdrew all the money from their bank accounts they were murdered and thrown in dams or left to die on the side of the road.
Please take care. Korea is generally a safe place but you need to be aware that crimes committed against women are not treated seriously and members of the public will not generally come to your assistance when you are assaulted. |

Realistically, this could mean a taxi ride of 100,000 if you live in different parts of Gyeonggi. |
