Sorry guys. The search function doesnt work to well on here. Im sure this has been covered. I need to renew my passport. Never did it here before. Does anyone know what paperwork is involved and the cost? Do I need a guarantor or can I pay extra to cover that part? And does anyone know the costs in Korean won?
Thx |

1st time = no worry.
It is about 177k won for "passport application" (120k won - get the 48 page one) and "Declaration in lieu of guarantor" fee (57k).
Get your pics done at any photo shop that is convenient for you. Print off the specs sheet from the passport Canada website and they will do them to spec and sign the back for you. http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/korea-coree/consular_services_consulaires/renewal-renouvellement.aspx?lang=eng
It takes about 15-21 days for the application and to get your passports (new and old) returned to you.
AFTER you get your new passport you are REQUIRED BY LAW to report the change to immigration (within 14 days). Save your receipt or they will start the 14 day clock based on the issue date of the passport).
Pop into your local immigration office (you need your ARC, both passports, application and a photocopy of the new passport).

Hmm...bit of a different question. I am a dual US-Canadian citizen and traveling on my US passport (visa is in the US passport). I have my Canadian passport with me too and it expired recently. Is it easier to apply for a Canadian passport here than back in North America (I will either be returning to Canada or the US next year)? One issue is that I'll be having a baby in August- will my not having an up-to-date passport cause problems getting Canadian citizenship for the baby? |

There's a checklist on the Canadian embassy website. Follow it to the letter and it should be easy. I got mine done a couple months ago and it was a piece of cake. One of the girls at the consulate in Busan is smokin' as well. I might throw my passport away just so I can go back there to apply for a new one. |

i'm not canadian, but i was going to go on a trip with my canadian buddy during our between-semester 3 week break, and he learned the hard way that it's a pain in the ass to do it here if you don't have your birth certificate with him.
we had to cancel our flight because most countries (in our case thailand) won't grant your entry unless you have more than 6mo of validity remaining from your expected date of exit. |

Just went in two weeks ago to get it done. It will be ready next Monday. Here's some things you need to note.
1. Make sure your photos are done correctly. MAKE SURE YOUR MOUTH HAS A 100% NEUTRAL EXPRESSION! I can't stress this enough. The people who are doing the passports are being quite anal about it. It has nothing to do with the embassy. If they tell you to do it again it's not because they are being pricks about it, but rather the makers are. I know of at least 2 others who had the same problem with their photos that I did and had to do them again and go to their guarantors again for signatures. In fact, I know of one guy who had to do it 3 times.
2. As for the guarantor. It wasn't a problem for me as I know a lawyer here who did it for me. However, I heard from some others that the embassy is pretty much demanding people find a guarantor. If they didn't have one their applications were denied. I know it says you can skip the guarantor section and do an in lieu of guarantor form. Legally you can demand this and stick to your guns, but in reality you'd be better off trying to get a guarantor in order to avoid the arguments, time wasted and/or extra money.
3. "SPICY" - as for you friend who doesn't have his birth certificate. It's not just in Korea that you need it. You need a birth certificate to apply for a passport in Canada as well. If he came to Korea and wasn't planning to apply for a new passport here then it's bad luck on his part. If he knew he was going to apply for a new passport here then he is an idiot for not bringing one with him cause he should have known the process. I don't know about other travelers but I always carry my birth certificate with me along with my passport. |

I found the whole process to be a huge pain. The embassy wouldn't accept the pictures I had done because they said I was smiling and I really wasn't. My fiance and I went together to renew our passports and they wouldn't accept any of my family's references for him even though we're not married.
My advice: Have lots of references especially if you have to sign a "lieu of guarantor" because you need different ones for that application than on your passport application. Tell your references because they WILL call them and ask questions about your relationship and stuff.
I heard that at home in Canada, you can just renew online! |

ANY material change in your status of sojourn is required to be reported to immigration within 14 days (irregardless of your visa status) so even on an F2 you need to report a passport change.
On an F2, employment does not change your status (sponsor remains the same) but a change of passport is material (tied to your ARC).

Ttompatz is certainly the authority on numerous matters; however, he may want to brush up on his wordsmithery.

Sorry, I was under the assumption that informal was acceptable except and unless the more formal terms would be required for clarity (and they were not in the post I made).
I also make spelling errors and forget closing brackets and parenthesis on occasion too.
But hay, being as how I is nufin but a poor and unejimacated kine a fella, I does da bess I cans wif wat I has.

Now I am not sure if it is parenthesis, or parentheses. But since we ain't gonna quibble, I's gon' leave it up to your constituency. |

I did "Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor." Easy as pie. And the girl working at the Busan consulate was hot. |
