Hi...a local store has a crazy sale on luggage today, so I need this info fast 
How much does it cost to exceed Korean Air's size limitations? (I checked KA's website, no info, their link to "oversize baggage policy" is dead, called their North American offices - closed - and searched the internet, every site just says "contact the airline").
They have a limit of this: 2 bags allowed, maximum 65" for one or 107 combined. I'm planning on buying two bags that are roughly 60-65" each, so I'll exceed the 107 limit, but I won't exceed the per bag or the weight limits.

Most of the planet gets by on 2 bags with a combined limit of 20kgs (baggage limit for flights NOT to/from North America).
IF you think you need that much space you are seriously over packing.
AS to Korean air - they are not likely to ding you for 2 large bags (as long as each individual bag does not exceed size limits) but will ding you (unless you are a frequent flier) for overweight.

The website works fine.
Go to KoreanAir.com, select your region and language, then "at the airport,
" "baggage/lost and found."
According to the site for North America in English:
Economy class gets 2 bags not to exceed 158cm/62in, and the weight not to exceed 23kg/50lbs.
32kg/70lbs is the absolute maximum weight, due to safety of the workers loading.
Overweight fee is 50USD/50,000KRW/60CAD, assuming you're leaving from N.A. |

I have two bags now that do not exceed the size limits on their own (62"), but do exceed it when combined (over 107")...so as long as I don't pack them overweight, I should be fine? I have no idea which airline I'm flying with right now, as I don't even have a set departure date yet, but judging from the way I've seen prices go the past few weeks it'll definitely be Korean Air or Air China |

The size limits of the bags are NOT combined. So, as long as EACH bag is INDIVIDUALLY under the limit, you're fine. I personally brought over a duffel bag that you could put a small adult in AND a regular sized suitcase before, no trouble. As ttompatz said, however, they are VERY unforgiving on the weight limit.
Also, if you're going over the weight limit, you're packing too much. Think about it. |

| I'm of the two minds about this. On the one hand I kind of agree that people should try not to pack too much, and understand that the US (and Canada, so North America, I guess) already tends to have a higher weight limit than most other countries. On the flip side, the US postal service charges outrageous fees for overseas mail. When I came to Korea on bag was VERY overweight and oversized and I was charged 100,000 won. I thought it was reasonable when I thought about how much the same weight would have cost to ship. |

Considering that 10 years ago the limit was like 40kg, it's not that hard to go over that 20kg limit. |

True, but at the same time, when I look at what I brought with me my first time, and what I brought with me subsequent trips, I realized that I had WAY over-packed the first time. I took six months back home before coming back this last September. I brought only ONE bag and a box with my bicycle in it. I had a couple of racquetball rackets and a winter jacket in with the bike, and I brought a carry-on bag, and my camera bag on the plane.
I didn't bring a lot of things that I brought on my first round. I needed new clothes, so I bought new socks in korea, as well as having extra dress shirts made here. I left a lot of things out, choosing to buy them once I arrived instead of lugging them along with me.
I.E., if this is your first time coming, realize that while you need a sport coat/suit, you'll only wear them a few times so don't bring multiples. Socks are a dime a dozen here. Shoes in your size are easily had. Don't bother buying all new things, then lugging them over here when you can pick them up here. Just my opinion. |

Hmmm...I thought combined size did matter...
China Air:
� Two bags per passenger may be checked free of charge
� Maximum dimensions of each piece should not exceed 158cm (62 inches)
� Maximum dimensions of two pieces should not exceed 273cm (107 inches)
Korean Air:
2 Pieces (max. 23kg/50lbs per piece)
The sum of three dimensions of each piece must be within 158cm/62ins.
※ The sum of the dimensions of the two bags must not exceed 273cm/107ins.
Thanks for the tips about socks and shoes, I was going to stock up on those things, but I'll take your advice and come with enough, but not too many. I have been buying shirts and sweaters and stuff (My arms are a little long for my body, so shirts can be a pain to find)
Definitely only planning on bringing one suit and maybe an extra pair of dress pants, the rest would be casual "slacks."
I'm thinking about returning my suitcases and buying duffel bags, simply because of the weight thing...I just realized that the suitcases weigh 11-12lbs empty...that's 1/4 of the weight allowance... |

China Air or Air China - 2 very different carriers.

It can help if the person who checks you in is friendly or in a good mood.
When I was checking in for a flight for Korean Air, one of my bags was about 5 Kg overweight (I was bring back gifts to Korea). The lady had to step away for a moment and the guy who weighed the bag just shrugged and told me not to worry about it. |
