Is anyone doing any sort of editing work?
I don't speak Korean, I work in Korea, and I'm thinking about branching out from only teaching.
I worry that there isn't much in the way of actual editing compared to translation type assignments, the translating which I'm not qualified for.
Those who are doing editing how did you find your assignments, and do you have any trouble in the way of it being illegal work outside your visa status? |

This has come up a couple of times, and it's usually not much of a topic. Nobody wants to spill the beans. |

There are "good" editing jobs and "bad" editing jobs.
I don't know how to go about getting one of the good (highly paid) ones, but I occasionally hear something like "I editted a 10 page document foe 750 thousand won." - don't know if this is ever true though.
Anyway - last year I was working part time (from 7:30 am to about 1 p.m.) doing editing and writting with an hour of teaching every morning. I worked for a company called ******** (pm me for the name) - I mostly edited press releases for the larger Korean companies, some webpages and a few brochure/magazine things. Also I wrote a lot (A LOT) of English tests (TEOIC and TEOFL) that were published in various books without my name on them.
Pay was around 1.6 million per month - if you work full time (7:30 am till around 8:30 or 9:00 pm) you get 2.2 plus a little more for housing. You also may have to teach between 3 and 4 and a half hours a day.
For me, the pay was really bad for the work that I did and I felt that I deserveed more recognition, however in the end I left because of the boss/owner - He was really slimey and alsways bragging about taking advantage of others (women, customers, you name it). He never did any work and I felt like I was busting my ass to make him rich. Also a compulsive liar - to customers and even to staff. I was there for exactly one year and have been out for 3 months now - everyone that was with the company when I becan have now quit - so new jobs come up very often (it advertises on this site).
That said, my experience there was really valuable - I learnt a lot about editting and copy writting and it helped me to establish a network in the translatting/publishing community - currently working on my first trextbook............ |

If you are seeking editing work make sure you don't have mistakes in your resume or other submitted material. Some friends of mine have a company that has recruited editors. They are amazed at the number of people seeking editing positions who don't take time to edit their own work. (See previous post. ) |

Calm down lawyertood
This is a message board, not a resume or something for publication
I'll be the first to admit that my spelling and grammar can be terrible but I'm not going to write drafts or proofread everything that I post on here
Someone asked for information and I tried to answer as best I could
You should also try not to be too condescending or arrogant in your application (see previous post) |

I also find that doing some editing and being interviewed with The Korea Times is that many Koreans don't like their stuff hacked.
Saving face or looking good?
Hmmm. |

Wish to extend the Visa by a month. Are the forms to do this online? What else would I need to do? |

Thanks Sucker (that's fun to write.... ).
Sounds like to get the good jobs you make a start like you did. I'm sure you can go for gold with your contacts.
I'm thinking of doing stuff from home purely on a part time basis, more for extra, possibly legal cash, than as a real job. |

I find it does help to know some Korean when one edits as there are often translation mistakes when can be easily seen. |
