That's flight and hotel?
If it's a respectable hotel I'd say that's quite good indeed. Maybe you'll be a bit bored by day 3 or 4 but if you're getting drunk at night and only experiencing half days anyway then it should be fine
I'd prefer a few days in Bangkok then go see one of the more exotic or remote parts of the country but that's just me 2 days in Bangkok + Phuket seems to be the most popular combination but there's plenty of others. |

I just paid 330,000 won for a one way flight to Bangkok on Thai Airways leaving in 3 weeks so OP paid exactly what RT on Thai Airways would go for right now. Not a bad fare, but one way fares to the west coast of the USA in this new year are pricey in the $1000+ range and even more to inland areas. |

Nope, that was just flight.
Now I have no idea what to do when I get there. Friends tell me "no problem, you can book a hotels when you arrive".
They tell me I can go to a travel agent near a hotel and book a flight to the beach. Too many people telling me too many thing. I just want to relax, take a cooking class, wander around, and then go to the beach. Yes, I want to shop, but one day shopping is plenty. |

Who did you book with?
I've usually found good prices with Cathay Pacific but they are a little higher this Winter.
Also Jeju Air (Korean discount airline) flies to Bangkok now too. |

I booked with zenith. I checked 3 other airlines, and he was the best price. Also his English is very good. I use him when I fly to NY, and he always gives me the best prices. I did not know about jeju air.
So, does any one have an idea what I can do when I land? |

Cool beans, I'll be going to Thailand for the first time in a few weeks as well.
As for accommodations when you arrive, I personally would have something booked in advance for a night or two. Check out the options and reviews on hostelworld.com -- you'll find something nice, fun, and cheap, and be able to rest easy when you arrive. |

OP. Be wary of booking an on-arrival hotel from the 'Tourist' desk at the airport.
These guys have a reputation for providing the unwary with out-of-the-way hotels (and they also use the 2 night minimum scam).
Many of their 'deals' come with a 'free' breakfast (toast and coffee) and they are overpriced and inconveniently located). You will spend a lot of money on taxis getting to where you want to go.
have fun in Thailand.
Good luck. |

Problem is that I do not have a credit card, and I need one to book a hotel. I got rid of the credit cards years ago. Yes, should have kept one, but too late now. |

I did that once for lack of a better option and it ended up okay, but I really wouldn't recommend it. I paid a solid 50% more than I should have and ended up around the corner from Siam Square. |

Thanks all who answered. Again, a problem is I do not have a credit card so I can not book anything before I arrive. I am looking and perhaps I can reserve a room with out it. But I do not think so. |

On-line bookings will usually require a C/C.
If you do it the old fashioned way (yes, companies can still do business without the internet), by telephone, most places do NOT require a C/C for a reservation as long as you give them your flight arrival information.

If dropping in at any odd hour with no booking, just take a taxi to Soi Rambuttri near Khao San Road and the Chanasankram police station if you want cheaper guest house and budget hotel rooms. For cool info on cheap rooms going for only $6.75 to $15 a night for a basic fan room with tuks tuks outside at all hours checkout Khaosanroad.com. If going more upscale and not so much backpacker style, then book a hotel out on Sukumvit Road with easy access to the BTS skytrain, business district, and upscale shopping. I like Khao San Road area in Banglumpoo for being close to the tourist places and the river where you can really get around the city on cheap water bus boats. |

OP. Don't worry about not having/using a credit card in Thailand. It is really unwise to give any Thai your credit card details - even a reputable hotel.
Relatedly, the lastest card scam in Thailand is putting a false keyboard on swipe ATM machines. The unwary tourist uses their card, types in their pin, and bingo - crims have all the details they need to clean out your accounts.
Good luck. |
