So last year I didn't bring my guitar to Korea because it was too much of a hassle. A director let me borrow his guitar, but then took it back after a few months. I picked up piano, bought a keyboard, and took lessons for about 6 months.

I've still got the keyboard at my gf's house in Korea, and I plan on playing it, but what's the best way to bring a fragile instrument (guitar) to Korea? I don't want to risk having it broken as it's about $1,500, and it has value outside of just the cost.

I'm thinking about just bringing it as a carry-on, but I'll have two huge luggage bags + a backpack already.

Any ideas?

Showing up at the check-in counter, hoping to get your guitar onboard as carry-on is a low percentage move at best.

Airline employees generally do not go out of their way to accommodate passengers with "carry-on" guitars, or deviate from their companies' luggage rules. Sure, there are always people who claim to have been permitted to bring their guitars on board, and then have them stowed in a locker. These people are in a small minority. They have benefitted from an employee who has tossed aside their company policy, and made a discretionary decision. Such decisions are generally made in circumstances where the flight isn't full.

If your trip involves connecting flights, then it is even more unlikely that you could talk your way into bringing your guitar as carry-on. And if you're unsuccessful in getting your guitar into the cabin, you should be prepared to pay a premium to check it in as additional luggage.

Buying a guitar in Korea may be a cheaper option.

Good luck

I just brought a Martin over from the states, and naturally I was worried about it because I was checking it. I just wrapped the guitar with bubble wrap and hoped for the best (especially because my blind buddy sat on it a year ago and put a pretty good crack in it.) It was repaired, but still fragile. Anyways, it made it safely. I know thats not always the case, but it was a risk I had to take to have my martin with me.
