|

So, looking for new job in the fall. Wondering if I should take the time to bang out an online TEFL certificate?
Btw, I have 4 years teaching experience in Korea, every age group, every English level. I think with my experience, a certificate wouldn't add much difference in benefit. If I'm lucky I guess I might get an extra 100,000W a month.
Does it matter what kind of TEFL cert you have? Honestly, I don't want to put in a ton of hours and loads of cash into it. Something in the neighborhood of a couple hundred bucks and few hours online is all. |

IF you are not going to work outside of Korea then the cheapest on-line cert (of a minimum of 100 hours) will do the trick.
IF you may want to go elsewhere you will need something with a classroom component (and observed teaching practicum).

I can't vouch for how it helped me to find a job. I got my most recent job as a last-minute fort of thing for both me and the school.
I was previously turned down by one public school because my pay was set to be too high (the certification played into this). |

Teaching EFL outside of Korea the floor not the ceiling is having the TESL/ CELTA certificate. This may get you into a low level teaching job in the Middle East. If you want to get a better job outside of Korea then you will need a Masters Degree. I would go with one in Applied Linguistics since the applicant market is already over-saturated with candidates who have a MA in TESOL.
If you want to return home and teach I would take time to research what requirements are needed. In California you need a CLAD certificate/ credential to teach second language learners. The public schools and colleges won't grant credit for a TESL certificate. If you want to earn more money in the field of Education back at home then I think it would make much more sense getting an MA in something that helps the MA pay for itself-such as in Administration or Psychology/Counseling. |
