Hi everyone. I've been trying to use the search function, but it keeps messing up/giving me a blank page... So I figured I'd just start a new thread. If anyone has a thread with my answer, please post it. Thanks.

I have my BA and as of June will have finished a 12 month contract at a hogwan here in Korea. I'm considering coming back in 2012, but I'd like to increase my salary. What certificates are best for this? TEFL? TESOL? CELTA?

I've been searching the web for answers for the last couple of days, but finding a straight answer has been a little tough. From what I've read, a 100 hour TEFL course is the only thing the public system actually accepts, and that the pay raise is only 100,000 won on average. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks in advance.

http://www.tefl-online.com/about-itto.php - It's 140 hours instead of 100, which my GEPIK school seemed a bit more impressed by. It was about the same price as the 100 hour courses.

IF your ONLY plan is to stay in Korea and get the pay bump then the cheapest, 100 hour TEFL course you can find will suit your purpose.

IF you plan to use it elsewhere (go to another country to teach) then the standard to judge by is 120 hours with a minimum of 6 hours of observed practicum with real students (not peers).

If you want your TESOL/TEFL cert to be globally accepted then the best recognized (and properly accredited) brands are the CELTA, Trinity or SIT TESOL certs.

Plan A will cost you about $200.
Plan B will take 30 days and cost about $1000.
Plan C will take 30 days and cost about $2000.

Get the cheaper one first and use the extra money to pay for the bigger ones.

How much of a pay increase am I typically looking at? I'm probably just going to do one more year abroad. Still have some debt to pay off.

Thanks for the responses!

In Korea 100k per month for any cert over 100 hours.

In some countries they won't even accept an on-line cert so you may not even get the job, never mind a pay bump.

Like I said - depends on what YOU want to do ... A, B or C.
