I'm now finishing up my final year of school; I have about a semester and a half left before I finish my degree. I'll be looking for a job for early/around this time next year. I'll also likely be doing a CELTA/TESL this summer.
How early can I start talking to recruiters / schools about finding a job. I know you can't get the visa started without the actual degree. Although I had heard some would take a set of transcripts that showed I was set to graduate, and get the process moving. Would it be possible to get a contract set up late this year, Novemberish, so I would have time to get everything sorted before leaving for Korea.
As always thanks for you all knowledge and advice.[/u] |

I think 3-5 months before you plan on being here is when you should start getting your application out. I'm not sure when you plan on being here. You said you have a semester and a half left. Does that mean you want to be here shortly after the conclusion of 2011 Fall Semester?
If that's the case you are going to fall in between the two big public school placement seasons. August and February/March.
I'm assuming you come from the US. So you'll want to plan on your FBI CBC taking 12 weeks to process.
It seems right now, a lot of recruiters really won't help you much unless you have all your documents ready (diploma apostillized, CBC, etc...). Some people are saying recruiters won't even touch you until you send them a copy of your clean CBC. |

Yes, after the fall semester this year, I'll be finished right around new year.
How long is my CBC good for? If I were to get one this summer I'm assuming it'd still be valid when I'd be applying in Jan/Feb
Anyone had any experience with using transcripts to show my degree is pending? I think it was on these forums where I read that. |

Last I checked the CBC is good for 6 months.
How long does your school take to print and mail diplomas? The apostille process can take a day (provided you don't live in a state with an 8 hour drive to your nearest Secretary of State office).
At my undergrand university "the diploma" they hand you at graduation is basically an empty folder that says they will mail it to you in like 2 months. However, when I got my MAT they gave us our diplomas right after procession. |

Its the same at my university, graduation is before Christmas and the actual diplomas are available for pick-up around the 24th of Jan.
That's partially why I was wondering about this, It'd be unlikely I would have time to set up a job starting in Feb.
Most public schools jobs start Feb/Mar right?
What about Hagwons, what is the hiring seasons/when do jobs begin, same time?
I'm pretty sure EPIK/GEPIK the application process can start before you have your diploma? I'm sure someone who did these programs right after graduation can answer that.
I'm looking to work in Seoul, and I know that market is most competitive so I wanted to get an early a start as possible. Location is one of the only job factors I'm really set on. I'd be happy with 2.0 / 2.1, standard benefits, 10 days vaca...
There are other cities I'd consider, Incheon maybe...I live in a big city here in the states and have trouble with rural areas here, much less in Korea. I've still got some questions about other cities but I suppose that's for a different thread. |

Hagwons go year round. Seoul is pretty hit or miss. It is highly coveted, but if you have your CELTA that should up your odds (and pay scale a little bit).
If you get your diploma at the end of January, that could be perfect for getting a PS job. Get your CBC ready beforehand. Start working with recruiters in November. The day you get your diploma get it notarized and apostillied. And you can have everything to your recruiter in under a week from that time. You'll have a whole month to get your visa issuance number and interview. Should be perfect. |

thanks jr white
I discovered ESL, and subsequently Dave's, in my freshman year. I've been researching, reading the forums on and off since then. It's now my final year and I've made the decision to pursue teaching (unless I cant get a job I've chosen Korea).
This forum seems to be full of a lot of active, helpful people.
Thanks for all your help in the past and undoubtedly, in the future. |
