So, many of you SMOErs and other Nets have heard the news that you might have to be cut, or if your school has 2 native teachers that one of you will have to be transferred.
My school has 2 natives, including me. If anyone goes, it would have to be me, the faculty knows this. Since the vice principal and principal both love me, they and our mother's association are making a few visits down to the school district office to plea for an extra 6 months until our other natives leaves.
What are my chances? Is there anyone I can contact or do in order to up my percentage of victory? I really love it here at my school, and I'm scared to leave to somewhere else after I've comfortably nestled into my current job. |

My school already does that, but with 2 NETs. But, my school is actually kinda big, like with 2000 students.
Maybe we'll get more overtime? |

Well, we're contracted for only 22hrs. This year I alternated every other week with a Korean teacher so I taught 26hr one week and 18hr the next. I didn't complain and I just did it cause this school was GREAT. But, after this transfer I don't give a crap - if I work more than that, I want my GD OT! |

Technically, you should be paid OT for those 4 extra hours every other week. Whether you want to make a stink about it is up to you. |

Yeah, I know. I just thought I was really lucky to be placed at that school where my relationship with the staff was really great. So, I thought whatever. They went as far as trying to cut the other teacher instead to keep me. As it turns out, the system is 'too transparent' and they can't do anything under the table. Boo. |

I have been working for SMOE for two years now and just signed for another year. I never heard anything about this. I am really sorry to hear about you situation. I think the best thing you can do is continue to work as hard as you can so they think twice about letting you go. If they let you go because they don't have any money then there really isn't much you (or your school) can do. Contrary to what others say there are still plenty of good jobs out there in Korea. Maybe you can still continue wroking for SMOE and go to another school. They are still hiring teachers for other schools. I wouldn't stress too much as it is out of your hands. I wish you the best of luck with everything and I hope things can work out. |

if you still have a contract that runs till August , you're transferred to another school. Apparently SMOE are giving the teachers that are in this situation first choice as to where they want to be placed in terms of district. |

How ironic. Some schools are cutting off NSETS while schools like mine are taking them in. I just received word that starting March, there will be 2 NSETs at my school (I've been the only one for the last 2 years). My head co-teacher is going bananas because she now has to deal with 2 of us (she just doesn't like all the paperwork). |

That is true. I had to give my top 3 preferences. I just received a message I'm getting my second choice, all the way east in Gangdong. I'm bailing out of SMOE next year if I don't like it. I visited the school today, so far the only thing I like about it is that it has 2 tennis courts right in front. My coteachers says this school has lots of eye candy (as in young nice looking female teachers with hard bodies - not kids) that remains to be seen. |

Where did you hear this? From a later post I see that schools are still taking more teachers. I am not sure what to believe. Many times when things like this happen it is so haphazard that nobody knows what is going on. Like I said I have never heard anything about this but I also live in a more affluent area of Seoul. We have never had much in the way of budget cuts. I think some schools are hurting and others are not.
I did hear of teachers being cut at other schools but they were also poorer schools that had other budget problems as well. I think this will all cool down but still it is annoying how unorganized SMOE can be and the lack of communication. Best of luck to everyone in this situation. |

Opps! I have to recomment on that. I didn't read it thoroughly the first time through. Only teachers that have contracts starting in March are being transferred. I know this because I am one of them. My administration tried to get rid of the other native, but apparently, the system is 'too transparent' so they couldn't do it. Teachers with contracts ending in August are SAFE. |
