I've been in Korea for nearly four years, on and off. In that time I've worked in two hagwons and one public school (one hagwon for a year and the other hagwon for three months). Recently, I've returned to the hagwon game and spent a long time going through job advertisements and recruiters before finally choosing a hagwon (and even then felt like I was taking a huge risk).
Now I've been at this hagwon for more than a month, work with a bunch of foreigners who've been here for varying amounts of time (between one and five years) and I feel like I'm fully re-assured that there are no bad surprises on the horizon.
The pay is a solid 2.6. The contract is solid with no forseeable loopholes and I haven't heard of anyone being screwed around. The hours are decent (I teach 25 hours per week). The hagwon is a chain and expects a lot from their teachers in terms of quality (not only do we have to prep a lot but we have to submit it online) which I think is a good thing as it gives me incentive to take my work seriously. There are also numerous opportunities for advancement (with many foreigners treating it like a career of sorts).
Everything else is peachy too (including my apartment which is a palace).
So out of curiosity, how long did it take you to find a good hagwon and how long did you stay at it once you found it?
I know quite a few people who found an alright situation in their second or third year but I also know quite a few others, like me, who have walked into situations with high expectations only to get the absolute minimum. My last job even had an extremely fair and solid contract and they still found numerous ways to screw me. |

As a first timer, I need to ask: can you get me a job starting in August?! Sounds like a dream, a legit private school. |

I haven't found one yet, but I haven't accepted any contract yet. There hava always been problems with the contract. Long hours, shady clauses concerning everything under the sun, incorrect tax rate, huge deposits, etc.
So grats to you for finding a great school!! My buddy got a great deal in his second year, but this was after he learned what to look for in a hagwon/contract/administration.
May I ask if your hagwon is part of a chain or independently run? |

I work at an amazing hagwon. Never any problems, and I can do as I like. i don't even cop any flack when I'm late for work.
I guess it does help that I own the place . |

My first Hakwon was a greatb place to work. The second one was a very good one too.
Its about research, asking the right questions and very importantly about our very own attitudes. |

I had a bit more than that.
