Got a 13 hour stopover during the night.

Want to hit the streets with the D90 and take some night shots, get a quality feed, some beers, perhaps a "night show" then go back (hopefully alone with camera gear still in my possession) to my hotel near the airport and fly out in the morning in decent shape.

What's the best area? Khao San Road area? I've read that's where the best sites that are illuminated at night are.

I'd recommend going to the roof of one of the five star hotels, at least for a couple drinks. Khao San is a dive and should be avoided. You'll get more interesting pictures if you hit up Pat Pong and find some trannies.

I like your title. Sounds like a porn movie that I watched.

Highly recommend taking the skytrain and stopping every few stops to walk around and check things out. Once you're closer, take a tuk tuk to Khao San but spend most of the time roaming around the outer roads - Khao San itself isn't a 'dive' but there's a lot more to see in the surrounding area. The temples nearby are also lit up at night, so you'll have some photography potential there too.

Not sure if you're suggesting debauchery with 'night show' in quotation marks, but Soi Cowboy has a lot of great lights & signs that make for interesting photos, and it's a good area for sex shows. That's at Asok if you're taking the Skytrain.

Otherwise, Siam plaza stays lit up pretty late and there's lots to drink & eat around there.

Except for Paragon and Central City (which close at 10:00) all of Bangkok is a dive at night. But if you must come I would recommend you go to the cobblestone alleys across the street from Khao San road. You can walk around there, go to the bars and watch the free pirated movies that they show.
Erawon Shrine and the Skytrain are worth looking at also.

Khao San may be a dive, but at least it doesn't attract prostitutes and sexpats looking for prostitutes.

Yeah I think Kao San is a beautiful, charming are of Bangkok. I feel quite at home there and there are many sights to see as well as some very good, decently priced hotels, particularly Lamphu Tree House.

The biggest problem with Kao San is to stay there or not to stay there. Because Kao San is no where near any public transportation. The ony way in and out is by taxi (or ferry if you have the time). And taking the taxi at certain times of the day is just a nightmare (for example, in the morning or after work hours around 5 or 6pm). So keep that in mind. But for many its a better option than staying at a hotel downtown.

Ekkamai is pretty happening at night, and pretty much devoid of prostitution.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I'd like to get a shot of Wat Arun at night which I recall being not too far from Khao San Road. I'm all too familiar with KSR but remember the streets nearby being very nice.

I'll have to get a taxi to wherever I go as I'll be staying near the airport for an early morning getaway.
