Is Gepik all done hiring?
Are there a lot of Hoagwons looking?
When is the natural cycle of contracts ending and beginning?
Do they mostly follow the school year?
March & September? |

EPIK/GEPIK (as in government recruitment drives) are done for this term. They will fire up again in late April for the fall term start.
Can you get a PS position = yes. There are lots of schools who did not/will not get a NET from the main recruitment so will hire on their own (but usually still with the standard EPIL/GEPIK contract and terms).
There are ALWAYS lots of hagwans looking. They look year round and there really is no cycle for them. They hire as needed, when needed.
PS recruitment mostly follows the academic year but there are always a few openings as replacements or because the individual schools were out of sync (usually due to a private hiring sometime in the past) with the main cycle. |

I think they are hiring in late April, but you can get your paperwork started.

There's something of a cycle for kindergarten hagwons, as the school year starts in March and they do prefer to have contracts begin and end at that time. There are a few more openings this time of year than in September, from what I can tell anecdotally. |

There's private and public, they hire at different times. Plus there are tons of agencies and recruiters out. Just make sure you get your part ready and you'll get hire, think positive.

Temperature: warm.
There are jobs. But fewer and fewer good ones.
More hours, less earning power.
It's an employers market. |

Sorry tompatz but your advice in this regard is almost as misinformed and out-of-touch as PatrickGHBusan aka Homer.
When were you last in Korea? years ago?
Or better still when did you last try to jobhunt in korea?
Korea is flooded with teachers. Full to bursting. Saturated. They are a dime per two dozen. I know several recruiters and they have all told me this. They're laughing! You have ivy league people getting turned away from mom'n pop kindiegwons in chungpingchongnam-do. You have qualified teachers working for 1.2 and sleeping on the bosses sofa. Its the worst recession in 60 years if you hadn't noticed.
There are no schools "desperately looking for foreigners". They've enough on their plates just shredding all the hundreds of rejected applications. |

Last in Korea about 5 weeks ago.
Next in Korea at the end of April.
Still involved in ESL in Korea and on payroll at 2 POEs.
For the last week or 3 I have been getting e-mails and phone calls about every other day asking to go to work somewhere or to recommend teachers to them if I am not available.
Are there lots of jobs = yes.
Are there lots of applicants = also yes.
Is the job market more competitive = yes.
BUT
Korea will still import about 15,000 newbies this year (more than in all of the E2s issued in 2006). Even with budget cutbacks there will still be more than NETs in public schools this year than there were in 2005 when I started working for the GPOE.
There are still jobs to be had and almost all job applicants who can actually qualify for a visa will find a job (even if it takes 2 weeks instead of 20 offers in 2 days).
There are also many other equally well paid (whole package) alternatives for those who are not glued to Korea by soju, lust, marriage, heritage or family and have the wherewithal to actually look.
Is it tough out there? Yes, but not as tough as it is in the states otherwise there wouldn't be licensed teachers desperate enough to accept working for 1.2 and sleeping on someone's sofa (they must have been truely desperate or daft - even the low end jobs in China pay better than that (7000 rmb) for someone with QTS and anyone with a pulse and a degree can land a job at better than that in Thailand (32k thb).

New to this site. Appreciate all the wonderful posts filled with insights, experience and knowledge.
Sometimes I noted people can be a bit harsh but overall I am so glad to have found this site.
I'm learning a lot as I decide my next steps to teaching in Korea
Enjoy a great day and happy belated Valentine's Day all. |

Tompatzz - you're the 'go to man' on the Korean side of the cafe. For real. The advice you gave me to pass on to a distraught person was just what was needed for them.
But I think that while Junior expressed it in a sweeping way, the ESL market in Korea IS plunging to new lows. Experienced people with cvs and resumes that have it all over young uns who have just graduated from North American/South African/Irish unis and have never worked in any type of teaching let alone English are, as we speak, being rejected for teaching in Korea.
When the expressed aim of an employer is to get an English teacher yet so many who actually did teach English or do that in some capacity even if they are not a certified English teacher but have the record, are being told no, no, no to any half decent job then there is something wrong with the market. I've talked on another thread about how my circle of friends and acquaintances are telling me for real that their friends and acquaintances can't get anything - and those people have more than what it should take to teach English in Korea. I've mentioned how I've met people like that.
I heard (AGAIN) just last night of experienced (and not necessarily 40 or over) foreigners who have looked for work for some months and not found it. They've been messed around by recruiters, blocked from getting considered for positions in Seoul or another city, even ones like Daegu, becaue they are 'old' which apparently includes anybody in their 30s in a lot of cases, and have been told that if they want to work then maybe they'll be tossed a scrap like a job that pays 2 million to 2.1 million won and has kindy classes in the morning plus other classes going on after hours.
This is a stinker of a job market for many people who er, can teach and have taught English. Recruiters are getting arrogant in ways I have never heard of before during my time in Korea. They are making ridiculous demands in tune with the ridiculous demands of exploitative employers. |

Yeah me too! People would go to other countries with warmer climates for this. Salaries have stayed the same, working hours have gone up, and maybe it takes a little longer to get a new job. But it still seems there is work here. I've been public for my 4 years here, but part of it rural and now living in a regional mid sized city with some western amenities.
I have yet to test the waters trying to go to Seoul, either public or private. I'll prob wait another year until the US economy recovers. Not sure how I'd stack up. I'm not a blond 22 year old female. Ha ha. I'm 30's white Canadian guy. But am considered nice looking. (I look younger than my age.) I'm not saying this to gloat. I'm jsut not sure where I stand if I tried to get something decent in Seoul. I'd be curious to find out. Maybe I'd be in the middle of the pile? |

If you want a job, you'll get one. Easy. (Unless you're of dark skin or very unattractive. Sorry, not my rules). |

Exactly. This is what you will hear from anyone who has looked for work within the past year. Definitely anyone over thiry. 30 is the new 60 apparently.
Most teachers are taking months, not weeks to find something at all reasonable. It took me 5 weeks, but I know people who took 5 months. Its been this way since the end of 2009.

Agreed, this group has been virtually eliminated. However at this time, darwin is selecting for the clueless. |
