I've been looking for a job for over a month now, and just something I noticed. How come all the times I've emailed a recruiter asking about specific positions, they have never replied back with the school I specified? Am I just paranoid or is it suspicious that some recruiters are posting 50,60,70 jobs every other day? How much of those jobs are bullshit? |

If you are willing to teach at another school, then the recruiter can fill 2 slots. So, it is to their advantage to sell you other positions not advertised.
This doesn't mean they won't use tactics and lie to you either. I was offered 2 middle school jobs and 1 for elementary school. I asked for middle school initially, so I requested the one closest to my girlfriend. They told me the next day the school already hired a teacher and the second one only wanted a female teacher. From my resume and photo they could have seen I was not female.
Did those 2 middle school jobs actually exist? Or were they just trying to fill the elementary school one? I took the elementary school offer and it ended up being a good year. |

I've tried to look at jobs listing as being more like a set of examples rather than achievable positions and I've just been contacting recruiters asking to be matched with a position against a very flexible set of criteria (student age, location and start date etc).
I've only been applying to recruiters since the end of last week but i've had a lot of vetting phonecalls and email responses so far & seem to be getting a positive response (i think flexible + docs ready seems to go a long way).
Personally I think that might be a better approach to go for rather than seeing a specific position and hoping to get it, as there's far more potential for disappointment that way... |

One thing I forgot to mention is that you should just communicate with the recruiter what you want. In April I went to interviews in Beijing and only found kindergarten schools and adult schools (recruiters even lied to get me to talk to the schools, telling me they were middle schools or high schools).
I gave up on Beijing and contacted a recruiter for a position nowhere near Beijing. She emailed back and offered a different position in Beijing, my current school. So, only replying to job offers that meet your desires might not be the best way to find your next school. Just contact any recruiter and see what they have that isn't advertised. |

You never know until you apply. Some has to be legit because recruiters get paid.

I think you're right. My friend she is a recruiter for hogwons and she said that anyone who come in with 0 flexibility in either pay or location they simply dont deal with.
(Although I know maybe some out there will say I'm not picky and will take anything and still cant get a job alternatively others will say that people shouldn't settle for less because that drives down wages and conditions. But at the end of the day this is the competitive environment we find ourselves in) |

With a lot of supply, teachers have to be more flexible.
