I'll be starting a new job soon, working in Chongno. My employer will look for some apartments for me in the Shinchon area. I've only been to Shinchon once so don't really know the area much. How much rent can one expect to pay for an officetel? Any supermarkets in the area or would i need to make a trek to the nearest EMart? Any quiet pockets?

I live in Shinchon. You can probably expect to pay a minimum of 550 000 for an officetel. There are a few supermarkets nearby. There is one in the basement of Hyundai dept. store, one in Grandmart across the street and one just up the street towards hongdae.

Oh, and my apt is so quiet. I am still right in the mix of things, but I can't hear any of the noise from the street.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

I just moved from there.

Officetels are expensive, due to the building fees. Don't let the cheap rent fool you.

There aren't a lot of places to do grocery shopping. However, the sheer number of cheap restaurants and variety of food is awesome.

The key thing about living there is location, location, location. You're surrounded by 3 of the largest universities in the country (including the miniskirt and high heel mecca that is Ewha), so there's never a dull moment.

I really, really enjoyed living there. I put on about 5 Kg during my time there, went out way too often, met way too many girls, saw way too many movies, ate way too much western food, but I had a blast doing it.

I would have stayed if I didn't get the rockin' job I have now.

The 르메이에르 officetels are right there on the rotary, and are a good place to start looking. Happy hunting.

Seems about right. I had 380,000/month for rent, and around 150,000 in building fees, give or take.

hmmm, i hadnt factored the building costs into the equation. 550,000 sounds a bit pricey for me. area sounds fantastic though! just want to live somewhere where i cant hear any noise once inside my apt and not too far from work or fun. my employer was the one who suggested Sinchon and said rents in Seoul can be anything from 350 to 500. And yeah, I gotta fork out the rent money!

Usually the monthly rent will decrease by 50 000 won with every 5 mil you put down until a certain point where you won't have to pay anything (usually around 40 mil minimum). At least that was my experience when looking for an apt in this area.
