There have been 'multiple fatalities' after a shallow 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch this afternoon caused buildings to collapse, police have confirmed.
Police said fatalities had been reported at several locations and that two buses had been crushed by falling buildings.
Christchurch resident Jane Smith, who works in the central city, told the Herald a work colleague had just returned from helping rescue efforts after a building facade had collapsed on a bus on Colombo St.
"There's people dead. He was pulling them out of a bus. Colombo St is completely munted."

My thoughts are with any Nzew Zealanders who have lost someone there. |

Scroll across to the "New Zealanders stunned by earthquake" video in the same link as the CNN crane rescue video which the above link opens. Truly awful.
Update, 65 dead, with that toll possibly doubling: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10708043
There is no good news here. |

I went to University in Christchurch, I have family and friends there.
My thoughts and wishes are with everyone back there, they still think upwards of 200-300 are still trapped under the rubble
I went home at lunchtime but couldn't contact anyone due to all the communication issues. |

Sorry to hear that Southernman.
I hope you find out. I have a few cousins and other relatives there. Though I am just wanting on hearing from others as they would know better than me. |

This is horrible for the people of Christchurch, my thoughts go out to them. It's terrible to see images like this, especially if you live in a zone that is criss-crossed by three fault lines (like I do). I don't like to think about the "big one" coming.

Thanks Summer Wine, my thoughts and wishes for your family and friends as well.
In situations like this, when you are so far away and only hear information second hand is probably the hardest part

My thoughts and prayers go out to people in Christchurch.
| Quote: |
During hours of chaos in the city, people dug through rubble with their hands to free people trapped. Firefighters climbed extension ladders to pluck people stranded on roofs to safety. A crane lifted a team of rescuers on a platform to one group of survivors in a high-rise.
(...)
Officials had established relief centers in schools and community halls, where food was being served to thousands of sheltering people and donated blankets were being handed out. In at least one park in the city, people -- many of them tourists who had abandoned their hotels -- huddled in hastily pitched tents and under plastic sheeting. The Red Cross was working to secure accommodation for them. |
Imagine that: people helping other people. So kiwis are not standing around expecting handouts? I'm awaiting Sean Penn to scream that the US is not doing enough to help, and that it's all the Republicans' faults. I'd wager there won't be streets filled with rubble a year from now. The Kiwis don't seem to need external assistance. They're wonderful people.
Culture matters. |

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs identified the names of the two missing South Koreans in Christchurch and yet they're not planning to help the rescuing effort?
This country sucks. |

Yeah, theres supposed to be approx 300 currently listed as missing.
There is supposed to be some Japanese students considered dead as they cant get into the building now and a fire has been in it over night.
It would be interesting to see if the number of tourists/students etc rises as many of them may not be in touch with thier families.
'
So may not be missed for a bit.
Actually in regards to the US, they already offered. In regards to China, haven't heard a word about any assistance from them. Considering they push the whole we are New Zealands friends and have had plenty of expertise in rescue ops in China, you think they could send some engineers and rescue personal. |
