I've got until the end of March to submit all the necessary paperwork for GEPIK, including my CBC. I just received my authenticated CBC last week from the FBI and am trying to decide which path will result in a lower chance of me being screwed over.
Should I send in the CBC for the apostille to DC or to the state SOS (said they'll apostillize)? The office to the latter is five blocks from my house.
Basically, I'm paranoid that if I send it to DC it will be lost/ not returned, and if I take it to the SOS it will be magically rejected by immigration. Anyone had either of these things happen? I only have one copy of the thing and probably wouldn't have the time to get another if I had to.
So, considering all of this, if you were me, what would you do? |

What state do you live in?
If its near DC, the US dept of State has same day walk in service for Apostilles.
If you have to send it to DC, expect 4 weeks turnaround time. State apostilles should be fine as well. |

From what I understand as we just went through this process is that your state can not apostille a document from the Fed. They can only Apostille a CBC from that state. But with a FBI check from what I read you have to have the US State Dept do it. We didn't want to mail it so made a trip to DC and walked in. It was very fast about 20 min. There were some people who seemed to be there doing this for other people or companies I didn't ask so if you know someone in or around DC I think they can do it for you.
Good Luck |

Some states will apostille a federal document. There is a thread on this first page of the Job related discussion forum about which states will and which won't.
Its not exactly clear what state the OP is from. |

I'm from Wisconsin and I posted in that thread. Wisconsin says they will apostille, and because I had only sent the fingerprints in the middle of January, I didn't expect to get the CBC back fast enough to have the option to send it to DC. I guess having the choice is making me think twice about which option is more of a gamble.
Basically, just wanted people to give their opinion on what the better option is. |

Gamble on what?
As long as you submit the "Original" FBI background check (w/ d.c. apostille or state apostille) it should be fine with Korean Immigration. There's a watermark on the FBI background check, so it's really hard to fake it. Plus a lot of people on the forum say, Korean Immigration doesn't even care. Someone actually apostille a copy of the FBI background check and they made it through Korean Immigration check as well. Seems like Korean Immigration just looking to make "processing/visa" money.
