So Im new to korea, today I attempted to convert euros to won in KB in Daegu, after waiting for about an hour I was informed by a very old lady with no english that i needed my ARC (or maybe she meant korean ATm card). How are tourists newbies etc without accounts or ARC cards supposed to convert money.

To my next problem, I've tried numerous times to get cash from ATM's using my Irish atm card (also a debit card but not a credit card). The option on the screen is only for credit cards which mine is not. Has anyone experienced this problem particularly with an Irish atm card (AIB).

Any help greatly appreciated, I am down to my last few bucks and need to figure something out soon. Thanks in advance!

Go to a KEB bank NOT the KB* bank.
You do NOT need an ARC to buy won - just your passport.

Your ATM card WON'T work in most Korean ATM machines. You will need to find an "international" one. You can usually find them in convenience stores and USUALLY there will be 1 in the row of machines at a KEB that is marked "international".

Thanks for the responses!

Since I made the OP I ventured out again and found success at Deagu bank with just my passport, which means I am guaranteed food over the coming days.

Still no luck with the ATM card, I have tried a number of convenience store ATM's with no success, I will try the KEB machines and see. I just hope that the fact it is an Irish card does not make it really hard to use.

Thanks again!

It's not that it's Irish, If you cannot withdraw the cash by selecting the 'credit' option for the card then that's why you have the problem. I have an Aussie card and have never had any problems withdrawing from any ATM, because i can basically use it like a credit card. Mine is a Visa debit, maybe that is why i am lucky...
