I am thinking about doing some volunteer work this summer, preferably an orphanage in Haiti or another country. Has anyone done this and know how I should go about setting up a volunteer opportunity for a few weeks? |

It's difficult to organise and it is ludicrously expensive. I did it when I was 17. I wouldn't recommend it. You don't really actually get to help others much. It's just paying for the pleasure of visiting a country. Also, I didn't find that many organisations are really that open with how they spend your money. You'd be better organising a holiday to 'x' country, and then organising individual volunteer projects after you've sorted your holiday. By doing that, you're in total control of how your money is spent and you still get to help people. |

If you want to do it for the experience of going abroad, then by all means, go.
If you want to "make a difference" you'd be better off making a donation. The costs of flying there, accommodation etc. are greater than what it would cost to hire a local to do the same work. |
