Girlfriend just told me about this news story.

In Korean.
According to her, a 20-something american soldier beat up a 70 year old korean man and then tried to rape his wife.
Seems like there may be a bit more to the story though. Anyone know? |

It happened in Dongducheon-- Don't know more than has been said, but it's true, and SOFA ain't going to help him!!!
Question is, are the Korean authorities just going to return him to the base and/or expel him, or make him go to jail?
For something like this, I hope they put him through the wringer!!  |

Under the terms of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), the Korean civilian authorities have first jurisdiction over US military members who commit serious offenses off-base while not in the performance of their military duties.

If the Korean civiilian authorities decline jurisdiction, then the US military will exercise jurisdiction. Rape is certainly a serious offense and thus there would be a court-martial. The possible penalty for that under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) is pretty severe. In this case, though, the alleged offense is covered under Article 134 (Assault--with intent to commit murder, voluntary manslaughter, rape, sodomy, arson, burglary, or housebreaking). The maximum punishment for Assault--with intent to commit rape is dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for 20 years. And being intoxicated at the time is not an affirmative defense as it seems to be in the Korean courts.

Regardless of who ends up with jurisdiction, I hope that whatever trial occurs is conducted fairly and, if guilty, he receives an appropriate sentence for the crime.
I also hope the backlash from this (alleged) crime isn't extreme.

"They" are not "all". I'm speaking about the "ones" who we all know do nothing but spit on Korea and it's people (and ESL teachers) and treat Korea like their personal playground.
Like this case and the story about the one Soldier who beat the crap out of the old dude in Itaewon.
I remember reading a thread a while back how a Soldier threw a teacher on the ground and called him a faggot for no reason walking out of a convenient store other than he looked at him.
I remember getting into a scuffle with one of them at a club because i was pushed into a group of them on accident and they wanted to fight right then and there.
Face it, a lot of them don't intend on staying here long, or care about the image they may portray. But the ones who do live here take the heat for it. It's a playground to them.
When I said they, I meant many.
When stories like this keep coming out, damn right I'm going to start developing some negative thoughts about our Soldiers. They need to grow up. |

That prison story is great. Its actually a ray of hope (from a strange place).
As for the US soldier... sad, sick... and yet another round of anti-Americanism coming around. |

Did you see the quote in that story from the woman who said some people see this as a chance to do whatever they want and then have a holiday at the Korean taxpayer's expense? One guess where she pulled that from.
