Im working at a mixed rural High school, and just got to see a copy of last years English SAT test and was very very concerned - how much experience do others have with this test? how on earth can we prepare students for it?
the particular question i was very concerned about was an extract from and old philosophy textbook of some kind - its a 14 line extract in which students have to fill in a gap from 5 possible answers - there is no way a korean high schooler could possibly understand the extract - and no way they could work out the answer - at least in my experience of their level.
What precisely is the purpose of this type of testing? and what role do we as NETS fill if what we teach them cannot possibly help them pass their exams?
has anyone else seen this type of exam? anyone else having similar doubts about how english is assessed/our purpose for teaching at high school level when the kids do not think of english as a language but a big confusing mess that might possibly get them a few bonus points if they get a lucky guess |

Are you talking about the Korean SAT's or the American SAT's? |

There is a HUGE gap between low end rural high schools and academic HS's in urban areas.
A lot of the 3rd grade curriculum is geared to the test, so depending on the level of the school, the students are well prepared. |
