The last couple of months i've seen a lot of various TV shows and the like on SBS, EBS, KBS featuring foreigners. They're also all are quite fluent in Korean and are often hosts or co-hosts of the show. Most of them seem pretty normal too except for this one girl that you see often who speaks Korean in a really loud annoying, overly dramatic, almost autistic manner...she's really annoying. So what's the deal? Is there a demand to see foreigners on TV or is this a policy shift to show foreigners enjoying Korean culture? The one i'm seeing now is called "보물섬" and it's about a foreigner woman learning about Korean marriage custom. Her Korean is really excellent (she's not bad looking too). I saw another one of an older guy actually teaching English in fluent Korean with a minimal accent, pretty amazing.

I believe it's related to the Korean Wave (Hallyu)

I've been saying that since the first time my wife watched that show while I was around.

I heard her on the radio once, it was in a taxi and the driver was intent on listening to it, it was not a pleasant trip to E Mart.

That Italian woman's Korean accent it pretty atrocious, but I'm pretty sure she plays it up for the camera. Anyone who has learned to speak Korean that well has to have learned how to overcome their native accent. She has found herself a nice character to portray on TV and is no doubt pulling in more money than 99% of the posters on here.

Also, there is a demand for foreigners on TV here but you must have at least conversational Korean, and somehow find the right door to put your foot in. Those doors are not advertised, and are difficult to find.

My wife was watching that show and I was reading a book and as soon as I heard her voice I looked up at the tv and watched her for 5 minutes and promptly left the room. You couldn't pay me enough money to act like that and I wonder why some foreigners do that (she's certainly not the only one). I suppose everyone has different reasons..

What shows were you on? How did you find out about them?

I get suckered into the TV thing too often... been on one show in January and shot another in January that hasn't aired yet... it's really only worth doing if you really have an agenda and want a soap box-- and are willing to fight with the TV people to try to make your agenda and their agenda line up. Don't do it to be on TV. If you're on for 15 minutes, they probably followed you around for a week and tried to force you to do stupid things that would be "interesting" (translation- make you look like a fool). I wrote a blog on it, if you really want to see the blog, google the thread title and I'm sure it'll come up.

Nothing significant. Few brief interviews. Jazz festival, Football opening, I dunno what the Hong Kong one was about but they just asked me what I thought about the place (I was on a ferry at the time), In the streets of Hongdae, Full Moon festival.

They generally just go to the first foreigner they see and ask them questions for foreigner footage.

They generally tell you when you're being aired but I have never watched myself, it was usually like 7am, way too early for me.

thats business

well, i speak Korean rather well and Ive had K-tv approach me quite a few times. People will talk about you. I went to a dentist one time for a "scaling" Smile and I hadnt been back in months, forgot about going there, and out of the blue, Busan KBS wants to be replace a wellknown K-speaking lawyer on some travel show, someone asked the dentist if they had seen a k-speaking whitey(tm). Bit I wasnt interested....I didnt do the show, SBS asked about me doing a short radio show. I refused that, Ive refused them all in my 10 years here. Id rather just teach a P++++++, the moneys almost as good as the stress is less. Ive been on tv twice for little interviews, one asked me to dance like a movie character, i just turned and walked off, but both times I spoke Korean on camera and thats enough for me.

Here people talk, if you have the goods, word can get around.

Being on tv here seems kind of ghey though. but if I needed the money and I had a kid or two here, Id probably have to do it. Ive always respected Issac, he works hard. That Steven guy who does the magazine now just kind of got fed up I heard...He seemed nice..

Once you become fluent in Korean or even reach decent conversational level these types of offers sometimes come up.

Cedar is right, in most cases don't do it just to be on TV. However, it can be fun to participate in certain shows.

My wife and I were on TV a few times when we lived in Korea. These shows were on cultural differences, living in Korea as a mixed couple and so on...

What was most interesting for us was metting the other people on the show. We actually made some good friends that we remain in contact with to this day.

Recently my wife was on a Korean TV show that discussed Koreans living abroad. She was part of a group discussion on that topic. She found it interesting.
