Hi
Has someone who has taught in both offer me some advice please. My wife and I are coming to the end of our hagwon contracts and are looking for new jobs. This is our second time in Korea and after a year of hagwon teaching and three years previously we wish to work in either an international school or a public school.
In between our two times in Korea we both completed teacher training and taught in the UK (Secondary Maths and Primary)
I assume we both have the experience/qualifications for these schools (but probably not enough for a university job?)
What are the pros and cons of each school ?
How do we get the ball rolling to find suitable positions ?
Are couple positions possible ?
thanks |

You and your wife sound very qualified for international schools. As a teaching couple, I think you two will not have a problem finding international school jobs. Google these websites: tieonline, search associates, tes.co.uk (lots of British International School Jobs on this site) and international schools review.
If you are not picky about where you want to teach then I think you and your wife will be able to land decent positions.
Good luck with your job search. |

QTS and more than 2 years in the classroom? Ya. Add ibo.org to your list for looking at international schools as well.
Pros/cons?
International schools have more work, higher expectations and better pay/benefits. You will be instructing in subjects not ESL.
Public schools (in Korea) have less work, lower expectations, more dead time and shorter vacations. They also pay (at their highest levels) about 30% less than the better international schools at the mid-range level.

You would both get university jobs with QTS, for sure!! Did you do the PGCSE or the GTP? |

Wow! You and your wife sound very qualified for international schools. Can you cut your traveling short and apply for international school jobs that start in August?
Regarding the difference between university and international school job query. I think that they are two completely different career paths. So, it is up to you.
International school jobs are great if you have children. Lots of schools will offer free tuition as part of your package. That's something to think about if you have children or planning on having children. |

No worries. It is possible to find mid school year positions. I've seen January/ February start dates. I always see Maths positions advertised. |

It may be hard to land a university job with no MA here. I'm studying for my PGCE at the moment and from what I can tell, the chances of a primary education certificate being accepted (or required) are slim.
Obviously secondary experience will be valuable but I think most unis ask for an MA now.
Obviously this is opinion - feel free to correct me if anyone has experience of this! |

About 1/2 the pay (compared to an international school) unless you hold relevant MA's and/or ABD/PhD and much shorter in the benefits package (airfare, housing, etc).
At your level of qualifications and experience the ranking in terms of pay/benefits would be:
1) international school
2) foreign language high school
3) public school
4) University
4b) hagwans... you may get a better pay package (monthly gross salary) than most universities that hire BAs (even with QTS) but in terms of additional benefits vs workload and paid time off they aren't even in the running.
