Not news here, but first time the local media reported on the budget cuts written about on blogs and forums. From the Korea Times:
Quote:
According to the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, the budget allocated to hire foreign English teachers fell to 22.7 billion won ($20 million) for this year from 30 billion won in 2010.

Cho Young-min, senior supervisor of the education office, said the budget cut is in line with the plan to reduce the number of foreign teachers in phases in the years to come.

``We plan to cut about 200 teachers in 2011 from this month. We will also gradually cut the overall number in the coming years, the supervisor said.

But he did not specify how many jobs will be shed at its GEPIK (Gyeonggi English Program in Korea.)

Arranged as a three-year project, the English program by the provincial office had hired more teachers over the past three years. In 2010, the number of teachers increased to some 2,252 in Gyeonggi, a 110 percent jump from 2008 when they first started out with some 1,000.

However, after reaching its peak last year, the number of foreign teachers is expected to slide over the next three years in the province surrounding Seoul.

Cho said the cut will be made upon requests from schools, with Korean English conversation teachers replacing them.

A lot of Korean public schoolteachers working in Gyeonggi-do are complaining anyways. It's not just the NETs who are complaining.

I still can't work out how he/she hasn't been banned yet. Touche, Ramen, touche. Very well done on surviving nearly three years of trolling without getting banned.

I'm not sure what this means.

Does this mean that they feel confident enough to have Korean English teachers teaching their kids? Is the English trend dying? Are there going to be more hagwons entering the picture to fill the gap? Or do they just feel like ESLers are causing more problems than they're solving?

If I was at a different/my last school, I'd be really nervous about my co-teacher having the power to get me fired...

co-teachers have always had the power to get you "not renewed". No-one other than the principal can get you fired (even though your co-teacher can complain loudly and it may result in the same thing).

As to the reduction in jobs, it is about a 10% reduction in the work force but with an annual recruitment in excess of 50% it just means 200 fewer newbies getting hired this year as compared to last and it is still double what it was when the recession started back in 2008 and the American refugees headed for Korea.

It doesn't take a crystal ball to see the writing is on the wall for entry-level ESL jobs in Korea.
