do people recommend going through Hana Tour or another travel agency or going it alone & booking airline, hotel etc. on your own? fyi i'm not interested in beijing or shanghai, but rather western china and way off the beaten track.

i did a search using the words "china travel agency tour trip" and the screen went blank-- apologies if this topic has been done before--

tours suck, do it yourself. i wouldnt do western china for my first china trip.

I took the ferry to Qingdao after I booked a hotel myself online. Once I got to Qingdao, I winged it by train through Shandong Province, which is definitely off the beaten path. The cities of Jinan and Weifang were amazing with few foreign tourists. An excellent adventure.
