Hey all,
I've lived and worked in South Korea for about 4 years but for the last 3 months I've been on a tourist visa. My girlfriend's contract finishes in June so I'm just hanging around till then. I'm not doing any privates, or illegal teaching operations, just on an extended vacation. (I saved religiously for 4 years.)
I need to renew my visa, since I'm not working at the moment and thus not doing anything illegal should I have any trouble just jetting to japan for a few hours saturday and coming back? |

Unless theres been some changes to the tourist visa, I would say not. I did a visa run a few years ago and there was an American woman who was living with her boyfriend and doing it every 3 months or so.
She took a boat over from Busan to Fukuoka went through customs, hung out in the terminal for 2-3 hrs until the boat was going back and then returned.
She said she had been doing that for about 6 months to a year. She said it was no problem at all.
I have thought of doing that just for fun. Its a nice if not pricy day away, but it sometimes feels good leaving Korea and the food is Japan has always been nicer and the beer definitely nicer for the same price as Korean on the boat. |

Out and back = no problem from K-immi.
Potential problem from the airline at check-in time in Japan (unless you can show onward passage from Korea - visa waiver / entry on arrival requirement and the airline will give you grief because they are the ones who get fined and bear the cost of your removal if you have any problem with immigration).

Yep still fine.
I usually stay for a night or two and hang out a bit, hit up one of the bars. Makes it feel less like I'm being forced to travel and all. |

I'm getting ready to do my third consecutive tourist visa renewal trip to Japan at the end of the month. Haven't had any trouble in Osaka so far, but this time I'm heading in to Hiroshima for a change of scenery.
The worst it got for me was an incredibly nice Japanese lady at the Jeju Air desk asking if I was just there to renew my Korean visa. She also gave me a free sticker.
So yeah, you're probably gonna be alright. |
