Homeplus launches its own chicken discounts

March 24, 2011
If you happen to see a stampede at your local Homeplus outlet this morning, do not fear. Its not a bout of hoarding in the face of natural disaster or a threat of war - but the undeniable lure of cheap chicken.

Homeplus, the nations No. 2 discount store chain, announced yesterday that it will begin selling whole chickens for a 1,000 won ($0.89) today.

And although its part of a month-long sales campaign to commemorate the discount store chains 12-year anniversary, local observers are harking back to another chicken-related phenomenon - Lotte Marts short-lived big bucket fried chicken.

Homeplus plans to sell 200,000 chickens at the bargain price at its 122 outlets nationwide. This limited offer will be until March 30.

Homeplus said it cut more than 80 percent off the market price of its chickens, securing 10 times its normal inventory in anticipation of explosive demand. With sales set to begin at 10 a.m. every morning, customers will be limited to just two chickens per person.

We are selling chicken at a drastically low price to reduce the burden on consumers and contribute to the stabilization of market prices, said a Homeplus representative. One-thousand won doesnt even cover the production cost of the chicken, and it is true that the more we sell, the more money we lose.

The Homplus chicken sale is prompting local consumers to make comparisons to Lotte Marts big bucket fried chicken that caused an uproar last December.

Lotte Marts offer of 900 grams of fried chicken for 5,000 won made a lasting mark on Koreans shopping scene.

Many marketing campaigns unrelated to chicken - or even food for that matter - have incorporated big bucket in their titles to imply big savings.

Lotte Mart, which withdrew its cheap fried chicken offer in less than a week because of protests from chicken franchises and small business owners, added big bucket to subsequent sales campaigns for electronics such as netbooks and TVs.

Big bucket has since then cropped up in commercials and jingles as a marketing catchphrase.

Only 250 were available from 10am and gone within 4 mins and 20 seconds according to a few Korean blogs I read. Massive hoarding by the ajummas and halmonis even though it was limit 2 per person.

What they showed on TV was a line-up, and each person held a bag, they got 2 and were sent packing. I don't know how they hoarded them.

Here's a picture of the line at the suwon homeplus. I can't even see the end.

Isn't it kind of absurd that people are so willing to wait in line for so long just to save 4,000 some-odd won? Couldn't they just go collect some cardboard and make a bigger profit?

I wouldn't go anywhere for anything where there's a line and stampede.

I suspect Koreans have not become familiar with the marketing strategy of 'loss leader'.
