Hey Techie Experts

I will be arriving in Korea in April. I immediately want to get a 24 monitor. I can get a used one off craigslist in San Francisco for $150. How about Seoul?

Dave

Looks like they run from around 180,000 for no-name Chinese models to 300,000 for famous brands like Samsung.

There's an LG there for 230,000......I'd say that's a good mix of quality and value.

Because Koreans think Samsung stuff is ultra-high quality and always a safe buy......so Samsung know they can bump up the price and Koreans will still pay.

You can browse this page which shows all size LED's......looks like 800,000-ish minimum.

Here's an LG 32'' LED for 810,000

LOL. What?

A few things:

1) Samsung is pretty damn top notch nowadays. Anyway, things like TVs are commodities now so there's not much difference in quality between the manufacturers anymore.

2) Samsung doesn't price high because they think that consumers will buy their products anyway. They price their products high because they control the whole supply chain from parts manufacturer down to the distributor. Korea also purposely restricts foreign competitors from entering the market easily. Korean's don't have a choice. This is carefully planned and controlled by the conglomerates so that guys like Samsung can make huge margins domestically and use this cash to be competitive abroad.

If they could buy a cheap Vizio TV in Korea they would.

What you say is partially true except that Koreans don't have the choice to buy cheap no-name Chinese TV's......they do. They're all over the Korean internet at around 30% cheaper than the Samsung equivalent.

Koreans tend not to buy them because of the low status they represent.....If you're a good middle-class Korean with a nice income then you buy Samsung or a Japanese brand. They also don't trust Chinese products as far as they could throw them because, basically, Koreans are pretty racist about the Chinese.

Even LG find it tough going against Samsung even though the usually offer a competitive product at around 10% less than the Samsung equivalent......that's how much a good rep Samsung has in Korea. They love Samsung here!!

Check out the Chinese TV's on Danawa..40'' for 688,000...cheap as hell....but I bet you a month's salary that only the poor Koreans will buy them...

Do places in Yongsan offer delivery in Seoul? I want to go pick something out but don't really feeling like lugging it back to my place for a 20k taxi ride. I will if i must, but that sounds the opposite of ideal.

A boxed 24" montor isnt big or heavy Smile
Unless you're buying other stuff too, I think with negotiation, delivery should be very possible and very cheap!

If this is any help, last week I bought this monitor:

http://blog.danawa.com/prod/?prod_c=1315357&cate_c1=860&cate_c2=13735&cate_c3=14883&cate_c4=14891

from a PC market (small version of Yongsan) here in Busan, walked in, paid cash 205,000 walked out. So Internet Vs Shop price is slim, as long as you bargain a little bit you won't get ripped off too much!

For translating, I mostly get by with just searching for the 'international terms' of HDMI DVI etc etc, that and GMarket.co.kr has an english version.
