Cheongju 2.3M
Jeju 2.1M
Cheongju - mostly kindies, some elem
Jeju - elem to Middle school (was asked specifically if I can focus just on writing, yay!)
Cheongju - pay for airfare up front
Jeju - airfare reimbursement
Cheongju- 0 housing deposit
Jeju - 150,000 deducted for 3 months = 450,000 total.
Thoughts? Advice? |

I live in CheongJu and it's a fairly decent city. Nothing special, somewhere in between rural and the more metropolitan areas I guess.
Seoul is near enough, as is Daejon. Decent expat crowd with a good mix. Do you know the name of the school? I could find out what they are like for you? |

I raised my concern with the Jeju recruiter that the posting was for 2.0-2.2 and the offer was for 2.1 and he said "they have another candidate that they like, if you try to change anything in the contract, they will just offer him instead." While I strongly believe that only by not tolerating this BS, will the bosses stop trying to screw us over, I also realize supply of ESL teachers is much greater than demand.
He also said schools never pay for airfare upfront... which is really surprising because I have another offer with airfare upfront. 
He also said that the school was looking for someone just to teach writing to high schoolers, but the boss said she has no high schoolers.
I just REALLY want to teach older kids than kindies.

Sorry, that wasn't phrased the best... I had inquired how to get the 2.2 and he said "they'll just offer the next guy, take it or leave it." So it was advertised as a range, but in fact there was zero range.
And the BS I was referring to in my post wasn't so much about that one thing, which taken individually isn't that big of a deal. What I was referencing was the collection of things that didn't quite add up to the picture that was originally presented. I'm only a few days into this thing and I could redline about 70% the job posting for truthfulness. But maybe that is just how things are done in ROK? Like I've mentioned, I've never been there. It seems a bit contrary that they are so strict on the visa requirements, making us jump through 3 months of hoops to get our E2 Visa paperwork, not only from the FBI itself but also apostilled by another gov't agency. I guess when there are so many formalities on the front-side, it creates an expectation that you're not just jumping into some lawless wild west where employers and recruiters can lie, cheat and steal at every turn. But I am a foreigner in their eyes and I am signing myself up to play their game. I just wish this game wasn't so lopsided.

No rookie, they aren't. Housing deposits are usually put into the contract after a previous teacher left without paying their utilities/phone bill. |

Funbar, your posts reeks of conceit, nothing new on the korea forums. BUT I am far from a rookie, I'VE been here 10 years. My advice is Don't take the job when they are wanting a 'DEPOSIT'!! Some people on the korean forums are complete utter idiots and dam right rude. Must be something to do with the unemployable coming to korea to pay off their student loans!!!! |

OK, firstly to the OP. Can't PM you as not enough posts. Asked my friend about American School. Do you know if the address is Gaeshin Dong? To play devil's advocate, my friend is a bit of an arrogant aussie who isn't the most accomodating at times. But you should decide on the following;

So it doesn't sound good. I know all of the people mentioned in the message and even though my opinion of them isn't high, I guess there is no smoke without fire?
As for the deposit thing, I think it would be completely normal for a company, any company to expect a deposit incase of future damage or bills being unpaid. However, if you do not cause any damage and pay your bills then you would get your deposit back. Just make sure it is written into your contract if that is the case.
If you want another recruiter, I recommend Teach Koreans. I know the guy who runs it, he's based out here, mainly recruits for CheongJu but I know he's starting to do a lot more business in the other cities and provinces. |
