A simple salute to Discovery, NASA, and specially to all crews living and deceased.
A fantastic chapter is closed for a shuttle "with a cumulative total of one full year (365 days) in space; the longest of any spaceship in the world."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Discovery

Now to look forward to the next chapter of space exploration...

The final landing.

I'm keeping my eye on Voyager 1. Man, they don't make 'em like they used to.

NINE

BILLION

MILES

away.

It takes 16 hours to send and receive nowadays. That is *light speed* communication. Light gets from the sun to the earth in 8 minutes.

How far is 16 hours? Pretty far.

Yet they can still make the machine do acrobatic spins whenever they please.

35 years it's been out there.

Voyager 2 of course is almost as far, doing it's own thing. Released the same year. about 6.5 billion miles away.

It won't be long now until both are completely engulfed in deep space, with no influence from our sun. Separated from our entire solar system. Gone.

That journey takes 35 years.
