Shindo 7 on Japanese scale. This means widespread damage likely. #quake
This one is literally almost off the charts on the Japanese quake-shake scale.

Tsunami warning issued for Hawaii. West coast states are watching everything very closely as well. |

Nice.
They're saying (CNN) that the tsunami waves may even reach Australia. Guam, Marshall islands, Hawaii, Phillipines, etc. are reportedly in danger.
Damn, CNN actually has some "Breaking News" that is actually breaking news.
Some incredible footage of cars and boats being tossed and swept along like toys and an oil refinery and other buildings ablaze. |

Christ, I was there last week. I had a feeling a big one was coming up after the NZ quake; I remember having a conversation with a friend about it.
Has anyone else seen the TV coverage with the cars on the motorway getting swept away? Awful. |

al-Jazeera English is also showing absolutely horrific pictures. They are reporting that the tsunami is higher than some Pacific islands (presumably places like the Marshals). 56 countries have been alerted, including Russia and Taiwan. I haven't heard Korea mentioned yet. Initial reports are 19 dead, but many many more expected.
Major disaster. |

Korea being so close to Japan and all, surely the Tsunami hit the ports in Korea? Maybe not since the quake hit the other side of Japan.
I'm trying to find pics of the Tsunami hitting Pusan or Mokpo or some other coastal town of Korea. |

For the east coast of Korea to be threatened, there would have to be a quake on the western side of Japan. Today's quake occurred on the eastern side, off Honshu. There have been several Koreans drowned in 2 separate tsunamis affecting the East Sea / Sea of Japan: "In both 1983 and 1993 the east coast of Korea was hit by tidal waves before but they were created by underwater earthquakes which provided some forewarning unlike this tidal wave on the west coast."

Excuse me for I only barely scraped through first year physics, but surely the ripple would carry around Japan and still hit the Japan/Korea Sea?
If the ripple is going all the way across the Pacific and causing alerts in Chile, why couldn't it find its way to Korea? Its not like the Korea/Japan sea is landlocked away from the Pacific Ocean? |

No, for the same reason Ko Samui and Singapore were unaffected by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. Both they & Korea are largely protected by a landmass between them & the tsunami. Any tsunami along the east coast of Korea is likely to be in mm, rather than metres. The forward movement of the tsunami would prevent it doing any fancy 's' shaped changes in direction & topography would deflect & negate any serious threat.
Here's a summary of the 1993 quake & tsunami:

The earthquake was on the other side of Japan which is forwarding the wave away and blocking wave from coming towards Korea.
I assume. #prayforjapan |
