Hey guys-
I've posted on these boards before with questions about English-language software in Korea, now I ask you how to use websites in English in Korea.
I know this sounds like a retarded thread, but I need help. I want to download Skype and use the account that I had in the US, but as soon as I try to, it redirects me to Korean, and I don't know what is going on. It won't let me switch to English. I can't go to the Skype US site, also because I get automatically redirected.
Inb4 I am an idiot. I am doing my best here, new to Korea. I am somewhat computer literate, but I can't figure this stuff out.
Also, why are all Microsoft websites/other websites in Korean even after i log into my Windows Live ID as a Yank? Is there some sort of setting in my Windows 7 that makes all websites/payment sites in English regardless of the fact that I am in Korea? Is there something I am missing? I can't even download programs because all I get is Hangul.
Thanks guys. |

I really hate these kinds of sites, and it speaks to the arrogance of a lot of companies who think they know "what's best" for their customers. It's one thing to redirect once or something if someone in a specific country comes to the site. But to make it so difficult that you require the user sacrifice a chicken or something greater in order to get you to remember/respect their language choices is ridiculous.
Several companies like Apple, Nvidia, and other driver makers like Intel all do this. I have my unicode fall-back language set to Korean for some programs that don't display fonts properly. However, my OS is set to English, and everywhere else it's set to English. Whenever I go to update, unless I want several of my apps to be in Korean, I need to change that, restart and install the drivers.
Itunes always updates in Korean, but runs in English the rest of the time.
If you set your region to Korea in windows live, it changes all your notification e-mails to Korean. Regardless of the fact that your language choice is set to English. Microsoft's answer was to pretend I was in another country.
As for websites it varies from site to site. For hotmail/msn related sites, usually near the bottom you can find 한국어, that means Korean language, click that and it'll let you pick a new language. Same thing on Youtube.
Skype..similar. Scroll way down on the front page and you'll see a pull down bar on the left to let you choose language.
Other sites just look for a little korean flag, or the word I wrote above and try clicking it. |

It's beyond learning Korean. I have a good grasp of Korean and some of those words are hard for me because it's not conversational words.
As for skype, I think at the bottom of the page you can change the language setting. What I do hate is sites where I can't change it, so annoying! |

just download the program. After you start installing it, it will ask what language you want to use. After that, if you are using the program to connect to the website, it will redirect you to the US site. |

This. So this. If your mom is like mine, it is accompanied by a slap to my face. Still does not help.
Why does Windows 7/Internet Explorer 9 not have a setting to make everything English?
I don't mean to sound like a dumbass, but surely there are lots of English speakers in Korea. How do they do it?
Thanks |
