I have a few questions I'm hoping you guys can help me with!
1. the online rep told me bootcamp comes with my new macbook, but I'm wondering if I have to install the windows OS? If I do does anyone know where I can get an English copy of windows?
2. I have a samsung x420 with a 1 TB external hard drive. Will that hard dive work with my macbook or will i have to move everything off reformat and then put everything back on?
3. My macbook came with a 500 7200 rpm hard drive but I'm eager to try a solid state drive. Did I make a mistake not upgrading through mac or should i just buy one at yongsan and have them install it for me? Does anyone have a solid state drive? Does it make that big of difference?
Thanks so much! |

Sounds like things are, despite all of your apparent preparation and forethought, still a mystery. I have no advice, but good luck and I hope you get Windows running on your Mac soon. |

You probably should have just gone with solid state when you purchased it.
Test out the external hard drive. If it mounts and you can move things to and from it, you're gold. If not, you'll have to reformat.
Good luck! |

SSD drives greatly increase the read/write time performance of your laptop. I would recommend installing one. Doing it yourself is a pretty easy upgrade. |

1. No you don't have to install windows.
2. Yes, the HD should work with the MBP.
3. You could always add a SSD later when you want. Pretty easy to do. About 10 screws to get the bottom cover off and swap out the drive. Should take 10 minutes to do if you are going slowly. I'd assume most shops would do it as a free service if you buy the drive from them. I've got two 17" MBPs (2009 and 2011). The 2011 came with a SSD and I added an Intel 128gb SSD to the 2009. Previously I had upgraded the 2009 with one of the fastest 500gb HDs on the market. Now they seem to both boot up and load programs just as fast as each other. The speed difference between a HD and SSD make the computer feel more snappy. If you're interested in pure speed, the new MBAs are hard to beat. My 2010 MBA seems much faster than any of my SSD MBPs. The thing boots in like 15 seconds out of the box. |

He misunderstood your question.
If you want windows, you have to install it with your own copy. If you don't want windows, you don't have to do anything . |

I have no problems switching external HDs between Windows and Mac computers.
It's easy to swap the internal HD to SSD. All you need are two special screwdrivers (Torx T6 and Phillips #00 or 000). There's how-to videos on Youtube as well. You can put the current HD in an enclosure to use as another external HD. |

One more question guys: How does boot camp work? Does it come pre installed? Do I have to take my macbook to yongsan and have them put bootcamp on?
I know I need a copy of windows but does it matter which version xp, vista, or 7? |

If you want to run Windows software on a Mac, Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion would be more beginner-friendly than Bootcamp. |

bootcamp is a native feature in osx. it doesn't come pre-installed per say, it's a core function and you cannot remove it. all you have to do is run the super easy installer and install any version of xp, vista or 7 you want.
if you want to play windows-based games or use windows-only programs then you want to have windows installed on your bootcamp partition. if you have no desire for games or use platform-agnostic programs then there's not much a mac can't do that a windows machine can (besides correctly utilize like a million korean websites due to their strange love for activex controls.)
as someone else suggested, parallels, vmware or another virtualization program can be pretty nice to have, if even for the previously mentioned and often pesky korean website problem. |
