So, I've lived in my crappy officetel for about a year now and we've had to endure rounds of wasps, mosquitos 'til December and now cockroaches. I've never had the luxury of dealing with these before and they seem to be crawling out of everywhere. This morning one dropped from the ceiling in the bathroom when I was using the toilet.
Any advice on what to do? I keep killing them with a boot but other than keeping things dry and obsessively making sure no food is out, what should I do? I plan on buying some Raid but as to plugging all the little holes, it's just an impossible task. EWWWW!!!!!!!!! |

Raid around the perimeter. Pour bleach in the toilet at night and down all the drains (cover the drains if possible). COVER YOUR TOOTHBRUSH. Those little buggers LOVE toothpaste.
I found 3 or 4 at my old apartment, and took those precautions and didn't have any trouble.
Put cereal in a sealed plastic tub. |

From the title I assumed this was yet another posting about hygeine concerns at the Seoul Pub. |

Combat poison.
I moved into my place, saw a couple roaches during the next few weeks. Put Combat poison along the baseboard, haven't seen one since. Also cleaned the place (the last guy who was there was a certifiable pig). Keep it clean, use some poison = problem solved. |

Thanks for the info! I have got to get some serious poison. Also, I'm now extremely worried about my toothbrush at home....so GROSS! Living with cockroaches has definitely made me feel like my quality of life has sunk to a new low. I read on the internet that cockroaches love damp places...like my bathroom that gets damp every single day Four more months and I'm out of that dump. |

You are totally right there! Although I am lucky enough to not have a roach problem in Korea, in Thailand I remember coming to my beach bungalow late at night, and in the dark I reached for my toothbrush and toothpaste, and TWO (yes, that's right, not one, but TWO!) large cockroaches scattered up my hand and freaked the hell out of me! Well, let's just say I got revenge on those little critters!
I wonder why they are so attracted to toothpaste though... ?? |

+11 for Boric Acid powder -- just write the words in English on a piece of paper and show it to the pharmacist at a Yok. They sell little boxes of it for around 1,000 won. Sprinkle in corners and along the baseboards. Leave it for a week, then sweep or vacuum it up. If the problem persists, repeat the application. I have never had to do it twice, as after three days, I didn't see any live roaches.
Boric acid is safe enough for humans that it is used as an eye wash -- try washing your eyes with Raid or the other poisons you normally get for roaches (or rather, do NOT try that -- my point is that boric acid is a better choice for many reasons). |

I lived with cockroaches in my old apartment (not fun). Get the exterminator out. Your school should pay for it. These guys know what they are doing and put the poisons in all the right places. |

Thanks to my relatives, I lived in Hawaii enjoying somewhat luxury. Really nice house and wealthy neigborhood, yet there were cockroaches. And man those Hawaiian cockroaches are huge!!! Including their antenna they are longer than a regular ID or credit card. There were almost a hundred poison traps in and around the house so I mostly saw dead ones or nearly dead ones.
All I'm saying, that I would trade this inconvenience for living in Hawaii, and having cockroaches doesn't necessarily mean you are living a low quality life.
Though it's also true that they are around for different reasons here and in some tropical areas.
If one neighbour has a welcoming home for them they can infect the whole building pretty soon.
Anyways, buy those Raid or Combat traps with poison in them and place them around your home. They are effective.

Again, I would suggest using boric acid yourself. The crap the exterminators spray makes me pretty sick, and seems to linger in the place for a long tme -- and it may not always get rid of the roaches. |

I'm not too hot on the idea of poisons in my living environment.
Do they sell roach motels in Korea?
I had a devil of a time finding any in the U.S. I ended up mail ordering an entire case of them, put some out and found that I didn't have any roaches. |

I don't know how to get rid of them but the one thing I was always told was not to use a shoe to kill them. You can end up spreading the eggs if you do. And if it makes you feel any better I'm pretty sure there's no hygiene issues with them They just look disgusting. |

Some people get asthma from Roach droppings.
As for the shoe, if you do use it to kill the roach (as many of us would), just make sure to clean the floor or wherever really well and spray it with RAID, then clean and RAID the bottom of your shoe. I'd recommend using a rubber slipper.
Also, make sure that your garbage has a snap-top cover, and empty it at least every other day. |

This~ Sounds more like there is a nest somewhere in the walls, and in that case no amount of raid will stop the problem.
I remember visiting a woman's home in Busan a few years ago and saw this for the first time...no big ones, just babies EVERWHERE..She would spray and kill 4-5..and literally within 2 minutes they would be coming back out of the wall again.
