Read it for yourself.

Let me explain why this is just so wrong. If a Korean newspaper had said the same things, been so dimissive of teachers, and had used that kind of grotesque illustration, many would be critical of it. Why then does a magazine that is supposed to exist to help foreigners in Korea show such negativity towards teachers under the guise of "humor"? Foreign teachers don't deserve to be treated like this by any media source, especially not one created and run by fellow waygookins in Korea. We're supposed to be 10 Magazine's customers, not their targets.

well, the newspapers reach a national, Korean audience. this 10 magazine is just a rag you glance at in some random bar in itaewon while wiating for your friends to show up.

it's too small scale and of too little consequence to anyone. think of it as your university's humor newspaper. little distribution, published once a month or less. then you had the normal campus newspaper which was weekly and mattered a little more but not all that much - that would be the herald and times.

Not inaccurate. I was one of them just a year ago. Now, I feel like an upperclassmen noticing the flocks of freshmen arriving on campus.

Baffling that someone one could be offended by that. Absolutely baffling.

The writer should follow his own advice

Yes- people will act silly. Get on Dave's and fire away like everyone else or move on.

As someone who experienced most of that in my first year I don't see how this is offensive. Seems like pretty good advice to me.

It didn't seem like advice to me. More so it seemed like they were saying, "Problem? STFU, newb!" It wasn't very friendly at all.

I think the problem with this article is that it reeks of elitism. Maybe for the writer who has been here for 10 years this is all old hat, but the new folks deserve a chance to be mystified and confused. It's part of the process. It can't be helped.

Certainly not deserving of a 'Like' status on FB, it wasn't that impressive nor harmful.

Nothing to see here. Seems like the author ripped it from his blog after getting writer's block...

Again, Al Bundy is right. I didn't read anything offending here. I feel like I usually land on the apologist side. But I don't think anything in here is offensive towards Koreans or NETs. I think most new teachers can benefit from advice from experienced expats.

I had the same reaction as many of you. How on earth did you get offended by that article?

Agreed with the previous comments. As not being in the ESL industry and well into my 6th year here..the elitist attitude is sickening.

If there is anything more annoying than a new person in Korea (not that they are annoying)..then it is the long timers who just cannot help themselves but to display their "been there, done that" attitude to newer folks. It's one thing to give help or advice to new folks...but the tone of this article (whether comical or not) goes way beyond that.

Like on facebook?...HAHA

Typical of the kind of condescending journalism you find in the English language press in South Korea: unoriginal, uninspiring and unnecessary.

The irony is that the writer was once a newbie too - we all were at one point!!

Here is a piece of advice for the journalist should they be reading: try writing something actually relevant and informative from which newbies (and others) will actually benefit from. Who knows, you might just see some benefit yourself!

If the writing in these publications wasn't so bad perhaps they wouldn't have to give them away like they do...

Considering that a large number of threads on the first five pages of this forum have been discussed to death over the past 7-8 years this forum has been alive, I'd say there has to be a better way for people to find the answers they need via a search function. I've seen other forums where a repeat thread like "Please tell me how to run my washing machine!" or "Why is everyone staring at me on the train?" would be auto deleted by the mods.

I thought the article was a little hard and sarcastic towards the new grads coming over, but it came off like jealousy more than anything else. I bet we'll see a rebuttal from someone talking about how old guys are all alcoholics, married to ugly women, etc. Very Happy
