I'm arriving in Seoul next month and I'm wondering if the city has a jazz scene. If so, how is it and what are the best jazz clubs? |

I've wondered this myself, and never spotted it, tho I think there may be a legitimate jazz bar or two in itaewon/gangnam. With all things Korean-interpreted-Western-stuff, you should lower your expectations as much as possible. |

There's a very good place in Hyehwa. Used to be a tenor saxophonist called Lee Jong Shik, who played there regularly. He's worth seeing - he can really play. He's well known (among jazz-heads) in Korea.
Sorry can't remember the name of the place and not sure if Lee Jong Shik still plays there, but if you wander around and ask it's not hard too find. I last went there in 2005.
There's a couple of places in Sinchon that are also worth checking out, but I remember the music being better at the place in Hyehwa.
I'll ask one of my co-teachers next time I see her and post more info. - she's into jazz too and will know the good places. |

The place in Hyehwa is called "Live Jazz Club". I've been there and it's a nice place with good music. Expect to pay 10,000 won cover on a Friday or Saturday night, and the food and drinks are pricier than other bars/clubs in Seoul. |

There's one place in Apgujeong or thereabouts that's worth checking out. |

Club Evans in Hongdae is also pretty decent. Located around the corner from Tin Pan. |

Just want to add that this is the name of the place, not the frequency of performances
Expensive, be warned. |

I'd actually say that Evan's isn't just decent: it's probably the best place in Seoul. All that Jazz is cool but if they get swamped, their service goes down the drain. The place in Hyewha has too many student musicians. There's one more bar in Hongdae that's really excellent but I'm spacing on the name. |

My colleague, who's a long-term jazz fan, recommends Once in a Blue Moon. I've never been there personally.
I disagree about Evan's Bar and Live Jazz Club in Hyehwa. When I went, the place in Hyehwa did have lot of student musicians but that was a warm-up act for Lee Jong Shik, who was blindingly good.
When I went to Evan's Bar I found the performances quite pedestrian, as if they were blowing through patterns and scales over a Jamey Abersold CD. Might have just been a bad night, or a one-off poor band but I thought they were mediocre and had nothing to say. Admittedly I've only been there once. |

I went here one night because it was recommended on the internet, and the place was swamped. We couldn't get a seat and had to leave.
On the one hand you think: it must be good to be that busy. On the other: the service staff couldn't cope with the demand, and there was no inch of anywhere left to sit down on.
Which is a shame as I love jazz. Are there any other jazz places in hongdae that would be less busy? If so, I'd love to hear of them! |

I don't know. The band was due to start at nine and we couldn't get a seat to watch them so we left before the music started. We just went somewhere else instead. |
