Hi,

First of all, I am an avid reader of the posts, but have never posted myself, and wanted to thank everyone that keeps the site going.

I am a 24 year old college graduate with a B.A in Linguistics and International Relations (double major). I have worked for three years as a Teacher Assistant in New Orleans (part time while in school) as well as one year as an English Speaking Au Pair (nanny of sorts) in France for four kids. I currently do not have a TEFL certificate. While I hate to add this, I am 6 feet tall, with light brown hair, and blue eyes.

I am only interested in teaching english at private institutions in Busan, but was wondering what my value might be.

1. Am I considered to be the same as someone with no experience, or does being a teacher assistant / Au Pair mean something.

2. Would getting a quick 40 hour online TEFL help me in anyway? In a perfect world I would love to get a CELTA, but I am currently unemployed and broke, so anything more than the bare minimum probably isn't within financial reach.

3. What type of salary could I swing? I was hoping for 2.2 - 2.5 which I know if above average.

Thanks all!

1) yes, no.

2) not help. The minimum standard for Korea is 100 hours. The global standard for a tesol cert to be recognized is 120 hours with a minimum of 6 hours of observed practicum with real students.

3) You are worth what you can negotiate.
As a newbie coming from abroad you can probably expect the standard 2.0-2.2.
With the degree in linguistics you may be able to swing 2.3-2.4 if you are a good negotiator.

Hi ttompatz, group

Thanks for the quick reply. Wouldve gotten back to you sooner but I've been off the grid with no internet access. Anyway, its certainly a shame that I'm coming in as a 'newbie', but the 2.3ish doesn't sound too bad and I could probably swing it.

Not sure if I should start a new thread on this, if so forgive me, but whats the policy on probation periods... I hear they sometimes last several months, which could be nice given that if I don't like the job I will already be in the city and could look for jobs myself. Will I be able to transfer my work visa if this occurs?

Also, (again, not sure if I should talk about this), but how safe is it to get privates tutoring students in Korea? I had heard its illegal but not enforced.

Thanks for your help
