Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying a Dell laptop here on the ROK, and they want me to pony up for the Ultimate Edition to get an English OS. I'm hoping I have a cheaper answer.

Would it be possible for me to use the Dell license key from the bottom (Home Professional 64-bit) to install one of the English Home Professional 64-bit disks that you can easily (and legally) download online? I'm just paying for the license, right?

Please let me know if you have any experience with this; I'm hoping to order it very soon!

Thanks!

If you have the recovery disk from Dell then you can change the install to use English instead of Korean.

You don't need a new version of win7pro.

I am also pretty sure (but not 100%) that unlike previous versions of windows you can simply change your settings to English and ALL users will have English instead of Korean.

Only ultimate will allow different languages for different log-ins.

My (ex) girlfriend bought a Sony Laptop here. When she turned it on the gave the option of setting up English or Korean. See if you laptop gives that option out of the box.

Actually, my DELL win7 pro (32 bit) only installed win 7 and did NOT install any "extra" apps and I am sure I am tech savvy enough to know the difference.

Our school bought all new DELL machines as replacements for our old Pentium dual core desktops.

I got an ultimate key from ecrater for 40 bucks. The key got blacklisted after a while though. I emailed the vendor and they replaced. All fine so far on the new one. They send you a link to the microsoft site where you can download a disc image of the OS, too.

Excellent news! I am indeed techsavy enough to find drivers - I'll have to do a wipe anyway to put a Linux partition on and get rid of the extraneous junk.

If this does work, I wonder why I've always read so much hullabaloo on here about finding an "English OS" in the markets and such... It seems like all of the big manufacturers sell their laptops with a license, why not just tell people to burn an English disk?

Thanks a ton for the confirmation. Word on Google searches pointed to both yes and no. I'll post back here if I try in a couple weeks and it doesn't work.

Cheers!

Also thanks to Gaber, although I hate paying for an OS once, let alone twice. As a Linux-only user for the last 6 years or so, I've subsidized MS more than once on an unused operating system. It's good to have that as a fallback though if the key doesn't work.

Because in previous versions it wouldn't work that way and they had to find a copy of English windows and the key would be different.
