Yeah, I know....it's not the national service. I have a sweet as hell gig, but they don't do pension and National health....
Spare me the sermons, I just need to be pointed int he right direction.
I've heard good things about AIG and samsung.
Any tips and things I should look for.
Also I regularly use a generic form of ritalin on prescription....will private insurers cover that? |

Typically they will NOT cover anything that is covered by the national plan AND they typically EXCLUDE anything related to preexisting conditions.
You may find an exception (as "in country" supplemental insurance) but I honestly doubt it.
You can always look at expat insurance but they are about 4x the cost of NHIC and the co-pays and deductibles are similar.
Another option is to look at self enrollment in the NHIC (an option as long as you have an ARC). Do be aware that they WILL collect premiums from your entry date on your current visa to the present (if you have been here for a while). http://www.nhic.or.kr/

Ouch!
I paid into the NIHC for years, but the last few jobs I took didn't pay into it....so I guess I would have to back pay on those premiums? |

Only if you have not changed your visa.
If you got a new E2 the clock starts then.

if you are on an E2 YOUR EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO ENROLL YOU IN NHIC!!!! Its a requirement of the employer in order to get immig to issue the E2 (yes you and your employer have to meet requirements to get an E2, if an employer has been caught say employing illegals they can be banned from getting teachers on E visas)
he's trying to get around this, get you shoddy insurance and pocket the difference. dont put up with this bs |

Naw, it's an after school program.....it's pretty normal for these types of companies and no they're not pocketing the difference(they're upfront about it like CDI).
In return, you get some stupidly decent perks(like 4 hours total work days).
I could enroll myself, although I"d have to backpay about 1 mil won. |

doesnt matter, you have an e2 visa? then they are required to enroll you in nhic period end of conversation. anything else is just putting more money in your bosses pocket, god forbid you actually get sick injured or get run over by an ajumma, you may find out you were never enrolled in anything and then you'd be up a creek |

Your listed as an independant contractor and no, the company does not keep the health care cut. This isn't wonderland....
As for getting run over, I have been.....the National health Insurance is rather weak and won't cover anything car related. It's more so for getting check ups, broken bones, flu infections, etc.
I've been in the hospital a few times(covered and non-covered) and had a friend who had serious surgery here.
If you come in with a real injury/illness, need to visit a specialist, or buy drugs you'll get a discount at best or no coverage at all. This ain't Canada.
I'd rather have a private coverage that covers me for something serious since visiting a doctor out of pocket is 20-30 bucks here....specialist 35-70k. Some nice docs waive fees, especially if your a regular. |

I have also been looking for private companies. And yes you're right, the national plan is pretty useless when something serious happens. I tore a ligament in my knee a few years ago and spent ALL my money on that.
I was given the name of three companies. ING is supposedly a good company for foreigners to deal with but I don't understand what the telephone message says when I call. I think I need to enter my ARC number but after that I don't know.
I called AIG and the woman told me they don't give out medical cover anymore (?)
Chartis says they no longer provide cover for foreigners.
I called Samsung and everyday they say they're going to call me back. They haven't yet in a week and a half. I got the number of someone else there and he said they wouldn't normally cover someone who was only going to be here temporarily. The minimum term for cover would be 10 years. But apparently they have a new product being launched tomorrow (Monday) that will be a 2/3 year plan. He'll get back to me with what it entails.
I'll let you know if you want. |

yeah thats true so people here as "independent contractors" could be in violation of immig laws and be in trouble, not sure who would get in trouble likely your employer
people who take these jobs are idiots as the employers are using this status to lessen their tax burden (ie paying into pension nhic etc) and exposing the teacher to those tax liabilites.
wish people would wise up and not take these positions |
