In general how do you find them? I'm on my third now and all of them have been a nightmare. Like they are constantly checking up on me because I am a foreigner. Claiming my girlfriend is not allowed to come and visit and other stuff like this.

Am I just getting unlucky or is this a more general thing?

I can only speak to my experience, and I've lived in the same place for the last 2 years, but I never see my landlord. Occasionally bump into him or his wife in the halls and do the smile and anyeonghasayo thing, but other than that no hassles. (And they live on the same floor as me)

Only time I've ever been hassled was when I had a small b-day party for my gf at my place. Even then, it was clearly way too loud and I didn't get any complaints until 11ish, at which point I figured they were well deserved.

I've had some bad ones. Don't ever trust them. Keep all of your receipts and make sure you are there any time they enter the apartment.

In nearly 15 years, I've had 4 (5?) landlords. No hassle from any of them. I probably don't need two hands to count the number times I've even talked to them once I've moved in.

It's better if they don't live beneath or above you. My wife had a problem with her former ones. Noisy, pushy ajumma and ajeoshi rentiers. Our current one doesn't come by often but responds to calls and problems quickly. Like with everything in Korea, they will always be different for everyone.

My wife and I have had pretty good luck with our landlord the last 2 1/2 years. She even extended our contract another 6 months plus so we could move out in Feb.

In my experience, the further away they live from you, and the richer they are, the better.

My current landlady is rich and lives somewhere else. The only thing she has done is check to see if we're OK, and have someone in to replace tiles in the bathroom (a couple had mismatching patterns). Didn't even call when I was late on the rent once or twice (I was out of the country).

When I had poor landlords who lived in the same building they were always bothering me or doing inappropriate things like letting the gas-person in when I wasn't there etc. (I wouldn't really care, but I had a cat and I was scared they'd leave the door open.. because gas people always leave the door open.)

Never had a problem with 3 different landlords. My first place was a 2-bedroom villa and we had a conga line of people coming in and out at all hours with no complaints.

i've had 3 landlords. one was an officetel one, never was bothered. second, i lived in a tiny, privately owned one. the landlord was nice, was never bothered by him. and the third, i see him a lot doing maintenance and i THINK he's entered my apt. when i was gone because. but besides that, he's a nice guy. no real problems.

i've heard of some bad ones though. ones that will just go into your apt. without any consideration.

I'm hoping for one that will rifle through my stuff when I am not there.

Are you in Seoul? I can see that the ones outside of Seoul can be nosy and such.

If your landlord has a beef about your woman visiting you, I'd lie and say she was your fiancee, and if that doesn't work, I'd either tell the landlord or landlady that it's none of his or her business or move out.
