Truly a gorgeous woman and a Hollywood icon, but also a defender of gay rights and an AIDS activist before that became a widely recognized or accepted cause. She leaves behind a legacy to be proud of. |

She was devastatingly, sensually, utterly gorgeous in her time.
A rare beauty. |

I was going to comment that I can't seem to bring myself to care much. She is more famous in my life time for all the marriages she has had than any movie she has made. But then you chimed in and reminded me how far society still has to go. Now I am sad we lost someone who could use her wealth and fame to show compassion for a mistreated group of society. Cheers Radius for using your bigotry to remind me to be more compassionate myself. |

She was indeed a fine example of a human being.....compassionate, aware, tolerant...........but was she much of an actor? |

She won 2 oscars and was the first actress to earn a million dollars for a film.

I personally don't remember much more about her work than a cameo on General Hospital and a zillion news reports on her assorted marriages and illnesses.
Was her support of gay marriage a good thing? Well if someone who married and divorced eight husbands is a good spokesperson for marriage, then I suppose that it is
....or at least it's no worse than the evangelicals who marry and divorce ALL THE TIME trying to "defend" marriage. I'm a Christian and I think that this is ridiculous. If people want to marry, let 'em. |

OMG, this is the first I've heard of it. With all the nonsense about Charlie Sheen and Lindsey Lohan's dad, none of the radio stations here have even mentioned it.
That's just truly pathetic. I can't believe her death is going by unnoticed around here. How did she die? She's not that old right, in her late seventies maybe early eighties, right? Was she sick? |

If I'm not mistaken she'd recently been hospitalized for pneumonia. For all of her notoriety she led a relatively quiet life, so it is not impossible for her to have been suffering from illness. Either way, it's the loss of a true Hollywood legend. They don't make them like her any more. She was one of my grandmother's all-time favorites. I just watched a clip on the NYT web site and they showed a brief bit of her performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf--wow! It's easy to forget she was also a great actress.
As for the comment questioning whether it was a "good thing" for her to be a spokesperson for "gay rights", I can only say that I am saddened to know that such baseless ignorance pervades. To purport to stand for principles of equality and goodness (whether they're rooted in secular thought or in religious doctrine) and then willfully operate in discrimination against a class because they are "different" or "unlike" you, is to fail to grasp the depth of what it means to seek equality and goodness. Gay men and women are members of this human race, they are citizens, they are loved ones, and they are deserving of champions. I'd offer to pray for you Radius, but I don't believe in a g/God, I only believe in goodness. |
