im going to bali with a significant other in early august for 2 weeks. she is flying into bali and out of jakarta. any suggestions on hotels, places on bali not to miss, off the beaten path, lombak/gilis, temples near yogyakarta, etc.....is much appreciated......we are both around 40 so 2 weeks in kuta does not appeal to us........

this is my ex and the quality of hotel matters so i cant exactly do my usual backpacker routine.......but im looking for nice accomodation at good value........

I loved my time in Ubud. I would recommend Honeymoon Guesthouse. It is absolutely lovely. Great staff, wonderful breakfasts, beautiful, romantic, etc...yet still very affordable (I think I paid around $30/night). Across from the hotel is a rice field....if you walk back quite a ways (I don't remember exactly how far) you will run into an open air organic restaurant in the middle of the rice paddies. I believe it's called Sari Organic and it's amazing.

My other recommendation is Amed. It's a small, quiet fishing town. I stayed at Good Kharma...bamboo bungalows steps from the beach. Probably my favorite place on earth. It's pretty rustic though, so it may a bit too "backpacker-y"

As fare as our top favorite things that we did was to see the Uluwatu Kecak fire dance.It�s done at sunset on a cliff by the temple overlooking the sea. It�s really touristy but a must see! You can do it as a half day trip from anywhere in Bali.

Ubud:
As far as our trip went, we really loved staying in Ubud. We stayed at a family-run homestay called Nirwa homestay, it was right in the ricefields in Ubud and was very peaceful. It was wonderful and the man who owns it set up our tours for a great price and was super helpful with everything.

Also, the Paon cooking school course was a great way to spend the day. They take you to the local market and to the local ricefields and you get to tour and cook in their traditional Indonesian home. It cost about $35 for the day including a huge lunch and was totally worth it. If you email them they�ll pick you up and drop you off at your hotel or guesthouse in Ubud. If you don�t stay in Ubud they can also arrange to pick you up wherever you are in Bali.

Kuta:
In Kuta we stayed at Un�s hotel. It was basic, but had air conditioning and a really nice jungle garden and pool, and was a short walk from the beach. The restaurant connected to it was really good to, the Balcony cafe, where free breakfast is included in the room rate. Overall, Kuta was a little dodgy.
If we went again, Balangan beach looked like a cool, quieter place to check out with beautiful views (near Kuta, but much nicer!)

Nusa Lembongan...just go. Cheap and unreal.
