We are moving out in May, and today we had our first visit from the good old boo-dong-san. No notice. Just an impatient knock on the door. I guess the lady thinks we're leaving at the beginning of April.

I decided to let them look but this will be the last time without notice. We have boxes everywhere. It's a real mess.

Then they asked for a number, I gave them my wife's. Then the cheeky female dog asked for the number combination of our door. 'For when you are not home', and I said no. She looked surprised actually.

I called my wife and asked her to straighten her out. My wife said 'you have ti give me at least 10 minutes notice.' and I told her to change that. An hour's notice, and only if it is convenient for us. If I am alone at home I simply won't answer the door.

Yeah, when we had our place listed they tried that with us too.... and we told them to bugger off. Luckily, our place was in demand, so they had to conform to our schedules.

No pass codes were ever given.

It doesn't matter if our place is in demand. They will conform to us. I will not be inconvenienced at all. No more unexpected visitors. I was too surprised to react properly.

What do you think proper notice is? I think 1 hour, and only if I am home anyways. I would not change my plans in any way.

I remember when I was getting ready to leave my last place. My school has the lease so I had no idea I would be getting potentials coming over when ever they wanted.

I tried to be polite and just let the agent show the place and be on their way. Usually less than a few minutes. The last one was the worst. I was busy getting ready for work, just out of the shower, half dressed, right in the middle of my routine. I hear the knock and know immediately who it is. I let them in and the potential and the agent just stood there in the middle of the living room chatting up a storm while I was trying to get ready. I tried to give them subtle hints by constantly walking back and forth between them and asking them to move out of the way for various things. No avail. Both those old hags just stood right there in the middle like they owned the place yaking about god-knows-what. I wish more than anything I had just politely pushed them out of the door after the first 5 minutes.

Yeah, this custom is surely the most tacky in Korea. I had a similar situation, but mine involved 40 ouncers of Cass Red and Soju laying out with empty nacho bags, a pizza box and wadded up paper towels all over the table from the get together I had the night before. Not to mention a new kitten I just got running around scaring the crap out of the potential renters. Classic. And they just carried on and did their little walk-thru.
Needless to say agent called my director and told him to tell me to keep the place cleaner lol Embarassed Rolling Eyes

1 hour is reasonable if I am home anyways. If I am out and they ask me to come home to show my place, no beans.

If we had a key lock and hadnt changed it, I bet they'd show our place when we're not home and we wouldn't even know anything different. They'd come, knock on the door and if no one answers, just let themselves in.

1 hour notice is gonna fork with any real estate agent's plans. House hunters are impatient and expect to see a place NOW!!

Yeah, you did the right thing not giving the keycode and not letting them walk right in. The funniest thing is that they might bring the people anyway and try to shake the door down like the Big Bad wolf in the 3 Little Pigs. Happened to me one time Laughing. I was in the shower and then I hear some voices outside the door. Then, a barrage of door handle turning and pulling on my door. I guess they thought their aerobic routine would magically turn my digital panel into putty.

Had the same problem a few years back. I just let whoever came to the door in. The Jehovah Witnesses were a little confused to why I led them into the bathroom.

Next time just answer the door in your underwear and you won't get many more annoying visitors.

Well I guess then that it depends on how much you need or want to sell your place (time you have to sell it). If you have no read deadline, then you can impose whatever conditions you want as far as advanced notice. no worries.

As stated however, homebuyers can be impatiant and depending on whats available on the market and how the market is selling they can easily move on to another place, ignoring yours, thereby making it longer for you to sell your place...you know best of course, it is your place.

Good luck.

It seems you misunderstood the situation.

We are renters. We did not ask any real estate agent to do anything. The landlord did. Hence my surprise 6 weeks in advance people want to come see.

It would have been common courtesy for him to tell us as well. We see him in the hallway 4-5 times a week.

When in Rome. Oh, I'm INCONVENIENCED! Oh, I FEEL INSULTED! THEYRE WRRRRROOONNNNNGGG!!!! Man, are you guys some corporate big whigs over here? On a diplomatic passport and your time is worth mint? Will your place to let to someone in the ver upper ranks of society? Hmmmm.....nope.

I've been on the board for a few years now, and I'm no apologist, but this seems like some over the top whining. Just calling it straight.

Get over yourselves. One hour? Give me a break. First of all, Koreans don't expect your place to be all polished up when it is shown. And Koreans looking at your place are looking to see if suff leaks, if the heat works, and the water is warm. Period. Empty bottles and pizza boxes? Whhhaaaaa. Unless you're in a place that runs over 200 million in key money (at LEAST), you're not really 'in demand' at all by anyone who can demand to see a clean place. Think about the population density here.

So that's why your real estate joe wants to come over on a whim. People shop here for places on a whim. If they're in the office and someone asks about a place resembling yours, they'll want to see it. Put up with it, and your place will get rented out almost immediately. And you won't look like such a schmuck to the locals.
