It mostly applies to hagwons/kindergartens.
All said can possibly happen; it is not uncommon.
That said, it is an exaggeration for most people. Nonetheless, there's a decent chance you'll experience some of the things stated to some degree. |

I suggest you do some research about teaching in SK before you make plans to come here. |

If you get freaked out by a random video made by someone who didn't enjoy Korea, then maybe you should stay home. All adventures incur risk. Your big step into the unknown is exactly that. You can't plan for every eventuality.
The video is BS......those nightmare scenarios only happen very rarely. |

The video is a collection of over-generalizations and stereotypes...unfortunately, over-generalizations and stereotypes are used because they DO seem to apply in many situations.
I'd say every word of the video can and has been true at one point or another, but just as no actual person is truly average or normal, no single experience will line up with every word of the script.
Think of it as a "you might be a redneck" skit -- that ain't a documentary about the American South, it is hyperhole...and if you think it is, then...er...yeah, please rethink coming to Korea. |

The OP is concerned, not "freaked out".
I think the OP knows that these things won't ALL happen to EVERY person. The title was "Is there any truth in this video?"
As the first reply said: YES!
All that stuff happens here. Look at all of the issues that are touched upon, and ask yourself if you know someone that has had one or more of these things happen to them.
1. Hiring based on white skin/appearance
2. Easy to qualify for a teaching job here
3. Employers changing the contract
4. Employers lying about the employee
5. Getting stuck in a sub-par apartment
6. Not allowed to take a sick day
7. Late pay
8. Problems getting plane tickets refunded/paid for
9. Fired in the 11th month
10. Problems with getting the agreed-upon two weeks vacation
11. Kicked out of the apartment when they are not home
Be honest, and ask yourself how many of the above issues have affected you or a friend.
Edited (twice so far ) for grammar. |

The video is true and it is not fear mongering at all. |

It is all true.
Stay away because once they (evil Koreans) get their hooks into you, you will be trapped in Korea and put in chains. |

I experienced some of those things only some of the time. Those things likely won't define your experience in Korea unless you allow them to. But, you should know that they do happen sometimes. Sometimes they happen. Happen sometimes they do. They do happen sometimes. Do they happen sometimes? They happen sometimes. Sometimes happen they do. You should know this. |

No one will ever tell you what is going on with any sort of timeliness. That is the one immutable truth about the Korean workplace.
If you can't read your bosses mind, it's because you don't have *Jeong*.
Do you know Jeong? It is very famous in Korea.
Foreigners don't have jeong. Even the Chinese somehow, even though it's their word. |

The stuff that happens in that video will typically only happen in private settings. If you're worried about that kind of stuff just apply public, EPIK or the Seoul equivalent.
And like other posters have said, this isn't the most common situation. If you do some research you can find a good Hagwon. I have some friends working at Hagwons in my city that really love their jobs, and haven't had any problems in regards to pay, apartment conditions, changing contracts etc. |
