I'm moving there in about a week and I know pretty much 2 people in Seoul, neither of which are in the Gwangmyeong area. Anyone know where foreigners hang out in Gwangmyeong (if they hang out there at all)? |

yeah, there is a fairly large group of foreigners in Cheolsan. Chances are, you will be in the vertical ghetto known as the Bobostel. check out the "english teachers in gwangmyeong" facebook group. We lost our main hang out spot last year, but the last few get togethers have been at the wa bar. I guess join the group for more info. |

Wasn't there a foreigner fight at the last meet up? One foreigner got knocked out from a headbutt. (Cursed at some guy's girlfriend because she harshly criticized his writing ability.) The boyfriend headbutted the dude but had to get stitches because he executed the headbutt incorrectly or something.

Well that's not encouraging! I'm not really big on fighting, or aggressive people in general. They really cramp my style.
I guess I can fly solo like I usually do. No big deal. |

You'll make friends. As hippi says: You'll probably be living in Bobostell Apartments. There must be, I don't know, about 40 foreigners living there.
It's not that bad of an area. You're about a three-minute walk to Cheolsan subway station; there are plenty of restaurants around, and you're close to other nice locations. |

wasn't exactly a fist fight.. pretty sure it was two guys talking smack and one of them getting dropped via headbutt. Anyway, it was an isolated incident and i think the guy who did it has left Korea(not because of that, but because he was leaving anyway..allegedly).
Regardless, pretty exciting for a wednesday night haha |

Yeah, I guess it's not all that uncommon. We had an interesting two nights, back to back, where there were fights at the main foreigner bar down here in Pohang. One was on a Thursday, started by some insanely drunk Korean guy who wanted to fight everyone, including his friends. He started choking people out randomly and almost made the mistake of taking on a group of Marines who all had pool cues. The next night a drunk foreign teacher punched a college kid, then immediately got his jaw broken by a huge Nigerian guy. It was pretty interesting, I guess. |

I've been living in Cheolsan for six years, but not in the previously mentioned officetel right by the station. I'm not sure how that place turned into the designated foreigner building, but a significant number of people you meet will live there. There are a pretty large number of foreigners in the area. There are a lot of hagwons around, the regular public school teachers, as well as people like me who work in Seoul but enjoy the cheap housing that Gwangmyeong offers. It's also convenient in that it's about as close as you can be to Seoul without actually being in it.
I hadn't heard about the fight at the last foreign teacher meetup but it doesn't surprise me. I think the facebook crowd is a bit skewed towards the just-graduated early-mid-20s party-hard group. I haven't been to one of those meetups in a long time, but the last time I did a bunch of people left without chipping in for the bar tab and a fight almost broke out among the people left with the big bill. Afterwards the remaining people went out into that pedestrian area by Mcdonalds and started yelling at random Koreans and generally making fools of themselves. My experience is that it won't be hard to meet foreigners, but it might be hard to meet foreigners you wouldn't be embarassed to be seen with or foreigners who are interested in anything other than drinking. On the plus side, on weekends many of the buffoons head to places like Itaewon or Hongdae, making Cheolsan a bit more enjoyable. |

Thanks for the info. I was hoping that I'd just escape to Hongdae, which I'm a little familiar with, but I guess it figures they'd go there too. That crowd definitely sounds like the crowd I make sure to avoid here in Pohang. I actually prefer the company of the local Marines to some of the foreigners here, although there are plenty of good teachers too. I guess I'll just float around and see what happens. |

I live in Gwangmyeong and used to go to the English teachers in Gwangmyeong meetup but it's very cliquey there and quite a few regulars there aren't so friendly to newcomers.
The other problem is that there are a lot of new faces who show up once and never show up again.
Gwangmyeong is so close to Seoul that most people don't bother hanging out in Gwangmyeong. |

Yeah, I'm not really big on people who still act like they're in high school. I probably wouldn't hang out with them more than once either. |
