So my gf is visiting from the US. She's been here all of 3 days and has a persistent cough. It's worse in the mornings when she gets up and starts to move around.
* She is a smoker and used a nicotine inhaler for the first time on the flight over.
* There were the obligatory in-flight SARS masks on just about every Asian female on the flight.
* It is "yellow dust" season and this is her first time in Asia.
She has a slight fever, 36.8C~98.24F.
Do you think it's just allergies/adjusting to the new place or should we be concerned? |

Same thing happened to me my first March here. Coughed for three weeks. Eventually started coughing up blood. No idea what it was. Doctor said "cold". I survived. |

Yellow Dust is not natural for Americans. We don't experience a cloud of fine sand particles from March to April. Where I'm from we get freezing rain and the occasional sleet until Easter rolls around.
Get your GF a mask and taxi her around town. Expensive, but she will feel better. |

She used a nicotine inhaler for the first time? I'd guess that's the cause.
The Yellow Dust is not so bad as to make a 3-day chronic cough......plus you say it's worse in the mornings....when she has been indoors sleeping for hours. So again, that points away from yellow dust. |

People who smoke shouldn't complain about coughing. |

yeah that does sound pretty bad.. I mean the symptoms she has.
My pulmonary functions get affected extremely easily by any foreign particle like dust and all I am getting are swollen eyes and runny nose. Very annoying and frustrating.. But nothing like her reaction. I also think it's not the dust. |

i would suggest taking some cough medicine and wearing that face mask to filter out pollutants that she's breathing in. maybe she's sensitive to it. |

My guess: the air is drier here and she smokes more because it's cheap and socially acceptable. |

In the morning it might be natural for it to appear worse. The natural mucous had time to settle and mix with other particles that might be foreign to her system during sleep. Since she's a smoker, the natural mucous lining in the esophagus has undergone damage and is thus even more sensitive to external change or irritants. Those masks do not actually keep much external bacteria out, so much as they keep your bacteria from spreading to others. In a non-medical and only suggestion-based opinion, it would seem like a good coating cough syrup would help, perhaps with a secondary cough suppressant for good measure. Be aware of any allergies to medication she may have before giving any kind of medicine, OTC or prescription. If she gets markedly worse, it is always a good idea to seek medical advice. Hope she gets better soon |

It could POTENTIALLY be a bacterial infection in her upper bronchial tract. If so, a course of antibiotics would cure it. You could take her to the nearest international clinic. There are many, but the three I can think of off the top of my head are
1) Yonsei University Hospital, near Hongdae
2) Itaewon (on the left side of the main street near the top of the hill past the fire station)
3) Asan Hospital, near Olympic Park/Jamsil |

Yellow dust has been bad this past week. Is there mold in your place? Some people have a terrible reaction to it, and it's a common problem. My wife developed this problem after many years.
The International Clinic in Itaewon will stick you for a lot more than a normal clinic anywhere else will. Think 30,000+ even with insurance. |
