the router at my work is just a plain old router with no wireless capabilities. I have a spare wireless router at the moment so I thought I would just replace my work's router with mine. I swapped them and after that the internet wouldn't work. I thought there might be something wrong with my router so I switched them back and they still didn't work. As you can imagine my coworkers weren't too happy.
I have all the cables hooked up to the right outlets. I unplugged everything and reset the modem but that didn't work.
After unplugging and replugging and resetting the modem several times a message popped up on one of the computers to contact our isp provider. They can't get to us until next week.
Does anybody have any idea how I can fix this? |

perhaps an internet login is required? try just one computer and one connection and do it that way?
Kicking yourself you just didn't plug the wifi router into a spare port now |

Maybe an ISP password?
Maybe a specific MAC address?
Do they not have phone support?
Explain this is vital to your business and you need help right away, if they can't look elsewhere. I have Hanaro and within a day they are at my place if need be. |

I can't imagine the anger that will be building up as your co's just sit in front of their computers the whole week, board out of their minds.
You totally should've just plugged it into an unused port. |

It's possible that whoever set it up before didn't hit "save settings" and the thing was just working by virtue of being left on.. reseting it certainly wouldn't help if you reset it to factory defaults and there was a crucial setting on there.
Does it work if you plug one computer directly into the modem? |

Try to get into the router and see if there is a fixed IP address assigned to the router. You might need those numbers for the new router to work. |

If he's actually reset the router (by hitting the reset button) several times, its unlikely there is anything left on the router at all.
if by resetting he just meant "power cycled" then there might be something on there, but if it's stopped working whatever is on there is likely in complete or wrong. |

Something you can try is logging into your router's IP address.
Go to any browser (that is connected to the problem router) and type in your router's IP address
(To find this, on a Windows-based system, access the Command prompt. With Windows XP/Vista etc you can search for "Command prompt" or, with Vista, click on the start icon and search for "cmd")
Type the following in the window that comes up (that should have a black background: ipconfig
Scroll to the top of that screen and you should see something like:
"Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:"
and/or
"Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:"
Find the bit that states what your gateway is and type that into your URL bar in your browser.
If you cannot find this number, a lot of routers use: 192.168.1.1
You might need a login and password for this, but it will allow you to access your router's set-up area.
Hope that helps. |
