I hear a lot of things are bought online in Seoul. Shipping time, i hear, is 2-3 days standard.
What types of online websites are popular here?
I'm thinking for regular household goods: garbage can, alarm clock, clock, hangers.
Groceries
Clothes
Electronics
Can anyone point me in the right direction? |

http://english.gmarket.co.kr/ --kind of like the Amazon.com of Korea. Products sold by different vendors. Probably the cheapest way to get most things here, and shipping is always very cheap if not free.
I've never bought groceries online, so I can't help you there. |

The big sites, called "open markets" in Korea are the most popular for this kind of stuff. All the items are sold by many different vendors. Gmarket has already been mentioned, and to my knowledge is the only one that offers any English service. Others include www.auction.co.kr www.interpark.com www.11st.co.kr
You can buy just about anything you want at these sites, and shipping is usually cheap and fast. There are also plenty of smaller, more specialized sites out there as well, depending on what you're looking for.

All three of the big Marts offer online grocery shopping.
www.emartmall.com
www.homeplus.co.kr
www.lottemart.com
They really offer great service. Prices are identical to the stores, and your order is delivered from the store that is nearest to you. If you don't live near one of these places though, you may not be able to place an order since they don't use delivery companies, they have their own trucks. They also allow you to schedule a delivery time, to make sure you'll be at home when it comes. The delivery times seem to depend on your location in relation to the store. I can get same day delivery from Emart if I order in the morning, but I have to wait overnight to get things from Homeplus or Lotte. Delivery costs are very cheap, usually 1,000 won per order, less than I would spend on a round trip bus ride or fuel if I was driving.
They won't deliver alcohol or tobacco products (illegal to sell online in Korea) and they also don't sell a few other things like ice cream that may melt before it gets to you. But just about everything else can be delivered. I've had great experiences with online grocery shopping. I would recommend it to anyone who is capable of doing a little planning ahead and would like to avoid the agressive ajummas with their shopping carts in the store.
For specialty grocery shopping (foreign foods), there are some sites that offer English service and cater to foreigners. I've never used one of these places though as the prices are outrageous. www.ezshopkorea.com is one that I've seen before, and I'm sure others can post the rest. |
