Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering what is a fair price for my services. I was wondering if you guys could help evaluate my worth. I understand that a regular teacher can charge 50,000 won an hour for private tutoring, I am interested in what is a fair price for me.

I much appreciate it, as I want to give my students the best possible service possible, and I want to be able to charge a price that is fair to everyone.

Education:

3.8/4.0 GPA from Ivy League School

Experience:

1 Year Private Tutor to Teach Korean Student English in the United States
1 Year Founding and Running SAT Prep Non-Profit
1 Year Private Advanced Placement History Tutor
Informal experience helping to edit admissions essays for university admissions.

Research Experience:

2 Years Research Experience (researching the most efficient learning methods, cognitive load theory, working memory improvement, etc.).

Contacts:

Several of my acquaintances and fellow alumni are Ivy League admissions officers.
Several acquaintances who are current or past employees at Educational Testing Service/The College Board (who understand how the test is formed, what the test bank is).
Many, many friends who are in Ivy League alumni (to help a student find best school for them).

Can anyone tell me what the going rate for my services would be?

It's worth whatever you can convince someone to pay. However, there are very few kids in Korea who hire private teachers for SAT or AP prep. Most of those parents send their kids to the well-known hagwon that teach these subjects.

In all likelihood, you'll be teaching pretty basic English to elementary and middle school students, and their parents are not going to give a rat's ass that you graduated from an Ivy League school or that you can teach SAT prep.

I'm not trying to be mean, and you do have great qualifications, but the reality is that most private teaching is at a much lower level of English than what you might be used to, and as such, I wouldn't expect to get paid much more than 50,000 won per hour for a single student.

If you can put together a class of 2 or 3 students, you could charge more per hour for the group.

Out of curiosity, why is private tutoring illegal?

(I heard that with the new labor laws, it is possible with permission from your employer).

Perhaps I am asking the wrong questions.

I merely asked because I want to be the best employee I can be. I hope that in this process, it can be fair to both sides (as I have heard a lot of tales of high-balling, low-balling, etc.). I'd rather have it be agreed upon and fair.

funny about the ivy league remark....we had a guy who worked at our kindie for like 2 years. He went to one year of Harvard (and was in 60thou bones debt!). He was a nice guy, but I dont think it really mattered to the kindie parents. Maybe if you were in a specialized Eng hagwon in Gangnam, or maybe at the university level, but most parents just use those "elite" school names becuase K-peoplez like only the big names (zero sum thinking).

Right now, we have this arrogant black lady who apparenty has a masters and is going for her 2nd. She used to exclaim "I have a masters!" or "I have to write a new thesis" until the boss asked me to talk to her and I let her know that it doesnt matter if you have a freaking Grammy, we only need you to teach the kids "A,B,C" and some basic vocabs and commands. She's quiet now, and strangely, wears the same clothes everyday. I think she has some serious debt problems. Good enough teacher though, so thats cool.

anyway, the point Im making is, unless youre in the the big Uni or hagwons here, most parents dont care about your credentials, they DO care about your appearance. Simple, but it works. "Look like a nice teacher" and youll do well.
