Hello,
I'm a teacher who has 10 years teaching experience in Australia and have worked with ESL students. I have a B.Ed. but no TESOL qualification.
What jobs would I likely be able to get? What sort of salary could I expect?
Thanks |

It all depends. If you work in public school you could max out at 2.5 million, and if you worked for hagwons you could probably earn a maximum of 2.3 million won. |

You make more at the public school?? I think the hagwons pay more. |

Only in terms of the base salary.
Hagwan, base salary 2.1-2.4 million won. 30 classes, airfare, severance, apartment, (if you are very lucky) medical and pension.
Public school, base salary 2.1-2.4 (with his experience and B.Ed he would start at 2.3). 22 classes per week. Option to add up to 6 more (for an additional 500k per month and a total of 28 classes). 4-7 weeks of paid annual vacation (depending on location), airfare, apartment, severance, medical and pension.
Additionally, he will get the airfare allowance EVERY year between contracts. Most hagwans DON'T.
Public school wins by a country mile.

Look at public school jobs in Taiwan. Qualified teacher status required.
Salary range in the $ 3,000 AUD with full benefits (air, housing, medical, pension, severance, vacations, family resettlement, etc).

My point exactly Tom. And I'm kind of like Aussie teacher. I am also a qualified teacher in Canada with experience, and I started off with 2.5 million in Gyeongnam for EPIK. So you can actually start off higher down here with the public school program and only have to work 22 classes a week; whereas, with hagwons down here, the max is about 2.3 for 30 classes a week.
I'm not sure about Seoul, Aussie, but that's the situation down here in the Busan area. |
